Here is my handmade knife #9.

I decided to just forget about etching, and instead use a center punch. Sorry there is so little light in this picture.

They say you should countersink all your holes before H.T. Do these little dimples count as holes that have to be counter-sunk? I guess I will take a 1/16" bit and give it a shot.

BTW, my initials are A.O., and that mark is a kind of altered version of my initials.

Just remember that you know what it means,.....but no one else will. In 100 years of study, I don't think I would ever guess A-O for that mark.
Nothing wrong with that, but FYI.

You don't need to countersink those dimples, but I would sand any raised edges flush before HT.

I agree with Stacy.

Personally, I don't think it gets much simpler than an electric etch.

Tape stencil to blade
Dip etch pad in electrolytic solution
Press pad onto stencil

Done.

The nice thing is, if you find an old 12 to 24V DC power supply, you've got an etcher that cost less than that center punch did. Then just give Ernie Grospitch a call at Blue Lightning Stencils, and for $8 you can buy a single stencil that could last you for a few dozen marks if taken care of.

Wow! Excellent info. I might still have my old float charger that I used to hook up to the moto during the winter.

This might seem like a dumb question, but, will this work?

I've experimented with the DC power supplies that come with so many small electrical gadgets and find I can get an etch with them. Now if only I had some stencils,...

@scs.knives
Looks like a little power adaptor for some music device or electric shaver :-)
Could you specify the output of the adapter? Would be great! Thanks!

Cheers,

Is the etch for stock removal/ stamp for forged blade tradition disappearing?

from what i seee yes its going more to etching (if you do it right you can make a really deep etched mark anyhow )
most ppl are shocked when i tell them i etch mine and not stamp cause of the depth
