YCS by Kesar, Initial Impressions

Uncle Bill,
A man who works as hard as you and is as unflinching in his honor as you are, has no one to answer to. You work endlessly and deserve all the credit due you. An ocassional failure is nothing. Without you the world would be darker.

Thanks for kind words and once again thanks to the smith who can write for much valued and very cogent analysis.

We'll survive it. It's generally not a very good time for the guys at BirGorkha and quite frankly they are showing us something of their character by doing as well as they are.

as is so often the case Uncle's sparse but well reasoned comments put me back on track in my thinking. Glass half full or half empty?---its the question everytime we decide to make a judgement of someone or something, and how you choose says alot about you. If you're lucky, you have folks like Uncle Bill, Yvsa, Rusty and others around to guide you back to where you wanted to be all along, but just didn't know it until you heard it said better. The trick is to be yourself and not fall victim to the PC trap. To try and take what is worthwhile from any viewpoint that rings true with you, and make it your own.

Whoops getting tired and philosophical all of a sudden:o Maybe its time for bed:)

To tell you the truth I don't think I'd be doing my best work if in the back of my mind there was the lingering thought of a Maoist tossing a bomb or grenade thru the window -- or blowiing up the bus I took on my way home -- or the cops busting me for carrying a dozen khukuris -- or Maoist recruiting officers showing up with a contract and a few AK47s -- plus trying to take care of a dozen people on $150 bucks per month -- ad infinitum.

Hell I start to whine when my office is too hot or its too cold out to take pics. Can't imagine working under that kind of pressure and stress, but I guess they don't have much choice what with family counting onthem.

A hearty second to what the last few posts said about those who work at Bir-Ghorka, their dependants and Uncle Bill and Yangdu!!

And lest my last post on this thread be misunderstood, I think that Tom said what I meant (Though he may disagree that what follows is what HE meant!!:) )

I'll rephrase my (readily admitted quite ignorant) thought:

If the power tools are used to produce forms that the kamis understand, the result will be wonderful and more plentiful and all will be delighted with the result. They may differ slightly from those produced entirely by hand, but if the kamis still know their behavior, no problem and everyone wins. Big.

If because of pressure from us, or from the kamis themselves thinking that they should substitute what they think we want for what they know, or the greater speed and ease of producing ill-understood different forms with power tools, or just a rare mistake producing forms outside of their experience, the result will not be predictable. Whether power tools are used or not. What exceeds the limits of understanding will vary from kami to kami, and only the kamis themselves and those who really know them can determine where these boundaries lie for each one.

If the second state evolves it's really no one's fault. They are extending their production, and we also benefit from extension of what we can buy. Pushing the envelope at both ends. It is likewise the responsibility of both ends to detect if things do go wrong so it can be corrected ASAP. I had maybe the first one of these things for a little over a month and didn't really test it out properly because I didn't want to mar the polish, thought the shape was most attractive, and immediately started working on beautifying the handles. I wonder if the error would have been made only once if I had acted differently and really chopped with the thing without regard to a little extra subsequent polishing to keep if pretty. Instead I waited until someone else found the problem before I stressed my khuk a little and found the same defect. I was seduced by it's beauty (I plead naivete since it was my third khuk in a matter of weeks) and I'll leave it to others to draw analogies to the opposite sex.:)

I guess what I'm saying is under the current circumstances, don't dump on the kamis too hard, or blame yourself Uncle. I think that I could have detected this sooner if I hadn't been thinking only of the superficial appearance of the knife. It's a circle. Break it anywhere and things are worse than they could be. (This is long and probably incoherent because I've splurged and had a couple of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywines).

Bill,

I had to sincerely reply to your thread where I felt you were knocking yourself. I am a newcomer to the Cantina and HI but I have bought a number of khukuries from you over the last month (I think it has been five). The service provided by you has been second to none. I have to admit my knowledge of knives is very limited but because I live in a rural area where sometimes things are not available locally, my knowledge of internet buying is quite reasonable. Your service is amazing. Any of my emails have been answered immediately, you are always answering questions on the Cantina, you seem to be on the Cantina seven days a week, purchases are sent same day, and your posts indicate you to be a true gentleman. At a time in life when many are putting their feet up you seem to be working at a frantic pace. Thanks for the service and remember people are human, kamis and Uncle Bills - mistakes will happen.

On a lighter note, after this endorsement I now expect at least two or three free YCS khukuries and three or four other free khukuries of your choice forwarded to me. I think I am starting to catch on to the American sense of humour.

Thanks, Glenn. I always said Aussies were the closest thing to Americans on Earth and you've just demonstrated that I was right -- for a change.

If I had a penny for everytime I've been wrong in my life I'd make Bill Gates look like a pauper.
