I have two YCS"S. The first one I got was horn handled and is made entirely different from the wooden handle version. The horn handle has a full curving blade, smaller bolster and larger inlays. The horn is made by Sanu and the wood was made by Mura. Is there that much difference in all YCS'S?

In a word, yes. There tends to be a lot of variation between individual examples of any given HI model depending on who made it and when it was made. This isn't a bad thing, it's just the nature of a handmade product made without a rigid pattern. Each one is unique and all have their own special appeal. Also, welcome to HI forum! I'm sure others will add their input shortly too.

I only have one YCS and it is by Sanu. I feel that the YCS is best by Sanu. That is only an opinion though!;) I wish I had been able to get a horn YCS though, by Sanu!! That would have ended up a safe queen though.

Road got it pretty much right.

Every kami thinks he's the best and knows how to do things better so you see variations. If you watch closely you'll see that Sher and Kumar generally put a round pommel on either the karda or chakma so you'll know which you are pulling without having to pull hit and miss. Bura always makes the best karda of any kami in Nepal. Beautiful little knives in their own right. Other kamis have their own peculularities, too. I guess this is what handmade is all about.

I've got to admit I like things that way Uncle Bill, that choice affects things like kitchen supplies (hand forged chinese cleaver and wooden chopping block).
These days it's nice to find something that someone made, not something that rolled out of a production line.

Just as well you like that way, sure as hell, the kami's aren't going to change their behaviors.

(right Bill?)

I have to say that of the two YCS'S the horn handeled by Sanu is the best. It is absolutely a work of art, That includes all three of the knives.

Thanks Kokochow!!!!:D It's too bad the kamis don't understand "thick and heavier on edge" or perhaps the YCS would be brought back. :grumpy: :(

Yvsa,
I wish for that also! Yesterday, I took all of my khukuris out for handle treatment and general knifesturbation:eek: . I was looking over the edges for the need of touchups and all, realising that the ones I have that are much older have the thicker edges with the more convex crosssection. Those are the ones that I know I can do any type of chopping with without fear of any edge deformation. I have noticed a tendency for the edges to get quite thin on the fullered blades especially. I have an old 18" non HI AK style khuk that is thicker than my 20" and has the perfect convex edge. It is indestructable! The more you mention the convex edges, the more I realize that the ones that I have that perform flawlessly are truly convex edged in design. I would love to see that happen to the YCS and have it come back strong!!:D  ;)

I think John Powell is right. It may be time for me to go have a heart to heart talk with the kamis. The longer I'm away the worse things get. Pala is too good a Buddhist and lets the lousy kamis get away with murder.
