I've been working on this off and on every since I found Blade forums. I went to buy an old industrial 4x36 belt grinder I'd heard about and the fellow ended up trading it for a 30:1 gear reducer.
The original motor was a three phase 3/4 horse which isn't something that I can plug into here at the house, so I found a one horse 110v Baldor motor on ebay. I really had to get into a battle for it and finally outbid the other guy (sorry dude). It's a chunk and I bet it weighs 40lbs by itself easy.
The chasis was in rough shape so I had to rebuild it and also build the platen surface back up. The original tool rest was also missing so I had to make up another one for it as well. So after all that and buying a 14 gauge cord and belts I'm finally ready to rock and roll. Well, I guess I'd better bolt it to something real sturdy first.
Anyway it works like a dream and I took great pleasure in plugging it in and hearing that sharp hiss of the belt over the platen. I've tried it out and found that I can't grind hard enough to choke that one horse down. BTW, The cigarettes in the picture are for scale.
OK, I've got a date with some O1 now.
