Yeah, stainless is great but still rusts in my pocket. How bout a high carbon Spydie?

Lets make this about gettin spyderco to make a carbon blade and not my funky chemistry shall we? Carbon steel generally turns black in my pocket.
I too would buy one without a warranty against blade breakage.

I once had an old timer middle man with nearly jet black blades. Best I can find it was made with 1095. It was always at the bottom of my pocket(hard to dig out), a sumbitch to open(had to open the two little blades to get the big one open), and always had to be wiped before cutting anything you intended to eat(rust or oil). Hang it will open eventually.....................
Still a good knife, till my father droped it point first into the hard wood floor(snap)
Now imagine if it had a pocket clip, holre in the blade, FRN handle or G10, and opened with the flick of the wrist!

Okay....
In that case, I think Spyderco would be wasting time and money making a carbon-steel folder.
Most folks simply don't want non-stainless.
And non-stainless offers very little if any real use advantage in a folder...nobody chops with a Delica.

I think Spyderco would be better off focusing on a method to make H-1 harder without being too brittle.

Allen.

I don't agree, for the M2 Benchmade 710 sold(and sells) like hotcakes!

If I'm correct, the M2 version ran for a very short while before it was discontinued.

And it was only available (as far as I know) with a coating on the blade to prevent rust.

AND, from everything I've read here on the forums, the average casual user will find very little difference in performance between the 710 in 154CM, M2, or D2 while performing everyday tasks.

Having said that....
Of course us knife nuts are going to want as many steel options as possible.
I'm looking for a M2 710 myself!

You might want to check out Moore Maker's #7100LB Lockback. It's 3 3/4" closed and has a yellow zytel handle but a carbon steel (1095 HC) blade. Kind of a modern/retro thing all in one package. 'Course it's not a Spydie, but then again it's not a perfect world.

Now that's a knife that interests me. :) Do you have any personal experience with it, or have you read any reviews? I'm curious what the quality is like (e.g., fit and finish, blade play, lockup, sharpness and edge holding, etc.). I may just have to put one of these on my Christmas or birthday list.

Which is why a non-stainless Spyderco clipit should be M4 or 3V.

I reiterate that I think that black S30V-bladed variants of the Para and Mil and Native are a missed opportunity. If you are going to DLC the blades, you might as well take the opportunity to make them a high performance non-stainless steel.

I looked at the 7100 but the handle is SO ugly.
Can't feel very manly with a yellow knife(rusty-yes, yellow-no)
Hey, I'm scared of a man with a knife... but I'm even more scared of a man with a rusty knife!
It was pretty cheap though.....hmm.... ...If I didn't like it....my 16 month old daughter should be needing a knife soon...perhaps a yellow one....

I totally agree with the idea of improving H-1
I need to get another and beat it to see how good it really is.

I totally disagree with me payin a bunch of money for some exotic stainless just to find out that it is rust-less(as in not as much)

Btw I am lookin in the area for a welder to "wave" my Civie

The rust vulnerability of a lot of carbon steels is really not as big a problem as many people think. I've had three (out of four or five, I suppose) S30V knives with minor specks of rust on the edge, one VG10--but I've had four D2 knives--and I've never had any rust on any of them. My D2 knives, it appears, are slightly more rust resistant than my S30V. Only one of those knives had a coated blade, but since the specks are on the primary grind in the S30Vs, I can't imagine how even this would help it. Brittleness of an overall blade shouldn't be an issue in a 3 inch folder. Worry more about the properties of the edge. My old school carbon steel Khukuri can take anything anyway....
