Years in the Making

> I’m not sure what else to look at.

Since you appreciate high-end knives, and since you already have several bigger folders, I suggest you to try a more compact knife (blade length similar to your Caly3) from one of these splendid and highly refined brands: Mcusta and Klotzli.

Nice to see you back! I was thinking about you last week, you are the one responsible for me having Vic Huntsmans in my packs and BOB's. I'm starting to carry the Farmer in my pocket more, but the Huntsman's are too handy not to have around!

Take that girl hiking! I started my kids out around 3 or 4, and they love to go (they are almost 9 now). They grow up too fast...

It's good to see you back around Buzzbait, I remember reading your post when I was here many years ago under a different name. I know you already have a Para Military, but have you thought about the CPM D2 one? You push a knife harder then most folks here I would be interested in seeing a Buzzbait report on this one. I really like my G-Shock still going strong after three years and some heavy Buffalo Bore 325gr. 45 Colt heavy loads(I shoot left handed)!

Hi Buzz,

Thanx for droppin' in. Appreciate. You are missed.

Your daughter is beautiful. They sure add much to a life.

Thanx also for all of the kind words about our knives. Always like to know we're doing something right. Guess we'll have to make a run of Endura4 pieces with a full flat M2 blade...."the Buzz-edge". :o

Take good care of your family.

Hi Sal. It's always good to see your words. And don't go teasing me!!!! A full flat M2 Endura4 (with orange G10 handle scales) would end all of this knife fun. You'd leave me with no reason to buy any more knives, except for picking up more Enduras for friends and family!!! :D But heck, it doesn't have to be an Endura4. I could even live with a full sized Calypso. Hehehehehehehe...........

Peter Parker - I actually considered the D2 Para, but just don't see the sense in going for it. I love Spyderco's S30V model enough that I don't think I'd have a full appreciation for the D2. But when a newly redesigned Para comes out, I'll be on it in a heartbeat. With that said, I could kick myself below the belt for not getting a BG-42 Millie when I had the chance.

sodak - I'm always torn between the Huntsman and Farmer when out hiking. I love the stout blade of the Farmer, and the truly tough awl. But it's so hard to put away the Huntsman when it has that handy pair if scissors. Always a hard decision to make.

I had been wondering if you were doing OK....looks like you are! Good to hear from you again. I recommend you get one of the Case swaybackjacks in CV. Very nice little knife and not too expensive either. Queen has a whole variety of D2 slipjoints and I have one and would definitely recommend getting one of those in any pattern. They are pretty inexpensive also. How about a paramilitary in D2!!! I had to get one and it is really awesome. These newer versions have some updates and are fantastic. If I had to pick just one knife..........well you get the picture. Good to see you back and hope you can stay for a while.....Ed

It's really great to hear from you all.

Mongo - As for my fixed blade carry, it has mostly been a safety issue. My daughter is young, fearless, and has some really long arms. She grabs for anything on me that isn't nailed down. I think the fixed blades are best kept hidden away until she grows up a bit, and when I'm not picking her up very 3 minutes. :p At least the folders are our of sight for the most part with her, which means out of mind.

The convex profile is definitely a winner. You can get sooooooo much control over your cuts with a well-shaped convex blade. Now if we could just get a production company to start producing a tactical folder with a full convex blade.

You can bet on the fishing. This summer will be her first good fishing weather at the age of three. A perfect time to learn how to fish. I've got a spot picked out and everything. There's a nice spot where my wife learned to fish as a kid. More sunfish than you catch in a month, and even the occasional trout or smallmouth bass. I'll just have to suffer with her using a Dora the Explorer fishing pole. :p:p:p

Buzz, stay tuned... rumor has it that Bark River will be coming out with a titanium frame-lock with an approx 3.5" fully convexed folder. Steel to be determined.

As for the Dora fishing pole... I have become VERY adept at using my daughter's BARBIE fishing poles!:D You can actually cast remarkably accurately with them. Some guy also caught a state record catfish on a Barbie pole this past year. Not sure where or how big the fish, but it was insane. I am fortunate to have a nice stocked pond nearby in Chicago suburbia where I take my kids. Blue-gill and catfish abound... they still won't bait their own hooks yet.;)

Welcome back Buzz. I've missed hearing about your adventures with Doris, the Angry Beaver, and most especially your Spyderco Dinosaur.

6. Strider SNG – This knife is my ultimate conundrum. I love the design so much that I can’t seem to sell it. But the cutting ability is bad enough that I never seem to carry it for more than a couple hours. Strider got everything right on the SNG, until they ground the shape of the blade. For some reason, the blade always seems to get hung up in what I’m cutting, the second the blade is buried. Does anybody know of someone who can regrind my blade and also reapply the tiger stripe pattern? If the grind were thinner, it might be the only blade I’d carry for the rest of my life. It makes me CRAZY!!!
Check out this thread.

I don't know if Tom Krein can refinish the blade, but his regrind should bring out the full potential of your SNG.
I’m not sure what else to look at. It seems like everything else new is either an auto or an assisted opening knife, neither of which interest me in the least. I was excited to see Schrade Old Timer slipjoints back in production, until I saw that they were all stainless steel. It’s too bad. The carbon steel Old Timers were so much better.
Take a look at the Northfield line. Excellent fit and finish, and well ground 1095 blades. Plus they sell knives with gorgeous sambar stag handles.
