So about 2 hours ago I was at work checking out a new Spec Bump that we got in for stock. I flipped er' open and wiggled the blade side to side to check for blade play. I then decided to see how good the stud lock was as far as vertical blade play. Sonofa! The lock had disengaged sending the recurve right into my index finger. I put the knife down to inspect the damage and it didn't look all bad, just a shallow cut along the side of my finger. All of a sudden a 3/4 inch long gash opened up right above the first cut and I was looking at bone and tissue... Kinda cool actually, its not everyday you get to see a clean cut through every layer of skin and then some. I'm still kinda pissed that the knife disengaged, idunno why it didn't lock up. I'll tell you one thing though, judging from the number the recurve did on my finger the Spec Bump should be one serious cutter.

hey uncle, hope you're alright. shouldn't you be getting stitches or something? :)

How's the finger doing? i messed up my left index with...no, not any of my usual folders but a plain ol' X-acto knife. I can't fully bend my finger closed now. If yours is fine, then man are you lucky.

By the way, nice username, Boondocks and Benchmade right?

Haha yay! a fellow boondocks junkie. Yeah I prolly shoulda went to the hospital but I don't feel like sitting in the emergency room for 4 hours just to get 3 stitches. My mom (a nurse) told me I need stitches but I convinced her 3 butterfly closures and some gauze would work just fine :)

That is why I don't like the non-frame lock Bumps. It's a gimmicky design that looked weak to me back when I was considering it. Thanks for the heads up! If I ever end up buying a Bump, it will have to be a titanium frame lock model.

Ouch. I almost gave myself a bad cut today. I was outside watching the kids so I though I would whittle a little. However, I just had my BM710 on me which really isn't the best thing to use to whittle with. I was being careful as I didn't want to slip and I wasn't wearing any protective gear. Then it happened, as careful as I was the blade slipped and felt the blade and tip smack into the skin between my left thumb and index finger, palm side. I was like "Great, this outta be a good one." and to my relief no blood starting running out and I couldn't see any cut. The skin was loose enough that the blade didn't cut into it, and just pushed on it.

You should get stiched up so it heals faster and cleaner. I stabbed my palm once and I should have had stiches and I didn't bother and it took a long time to heal all the way up and left me with a nice little scar. :)

Wade, send your 710 to me for a proper sharpening...

Don't worry, it's plenty sharp. I was just lucky the blade's edge didn't slide across my skin, the edge just pressed against it. Had the blade been drawn across my skin it would have been sliced right open. Even with a properly sharpened straight razor you can press your thumb lightly against the edge and it won't cut you unless you slide your thumb. I was just lucky the way the blade hit me.

We have all had our knives bite us at one point or another. Just last week i was slicing paper after sharpening my blur to see how much the edge improved, but being the idiot i am i missed the paper and cut a patch of skin off of my left index and a took a chunk out of my thumb. But hey, let's look at the upside at least i KNOW that i got the edge back to factory sharp.

I have a firm belief that a knife isn't truly mine until it bites me but hopefully the bite doesn't involve a trip to the hospital.

I've been really lucky lately, I haven't cut myself in a good long time. Of course, having said that, I'll probably slice the ends off of three of my fingers flicking my Rukus open and closed. I play with my knives constantly but I don't cut myself much any more, I think I've conditioned my fingers to stay out of the way "or else". The last thing I cut myself with was our vacuum cleaner. I have no idea how I managed that but I did.

I would take pics but that would mean I'd have to take the 3 bandages of my finger that are holding the wound together. It won't look half as bad as it did yesterday because you can't see inside my finger anymore :). The last time a blade touched my skin I was flipping my rukus through my fingers and the tip stabbed my wrist. It wasnt bad at all, this is the first time I've actually needed a bandage from a knife bite.

That sounds painful.... about two months ago I did something similar to my finger except I stabbed. Dont ask how but it happend:o .

I play with my knives a lot too, moonwilson, but letley i havent cut myself at all either, fingers the same thing:P i had 5 cuts on each of my thumbs before haha. super glue and duct tape are your best friends indeed....

if somethings moving and you want it to stop, use duct tape. if somethings not moving and you want it to, use WD40:)

i wanna see pics of the cut lol.. i use a spec bump too.. what do you sharpen it with?

P.S. my thumbprints are actually scarred up because of knife testing and whatnot.. got i think... 7? different scars from knife accidents.. only 2 from myself... and im only 16. Im dreading seeing what ill be like at 50.
