I don't think two khukuris made by hammer and eyeball, by two different smiths no less, are going to match more closely than these.

They'll even fit in each others' scabbards - though one is on the loose side and the other on the tight side of ideal when I do that.

Kumar - 15 ounces, Kesar 16 ounces.

Both feel lively in my hand anyway. Nice!

This tells you something not only about the capabities of these kamis but of their way of thinking -- and something about the sarkis, too.

We asked that the knives matched and be made by Kumar because we wanted the Kumar mark on the blades but we did not say that specifically. The mark was not important to them if they could make matching blades and they did. What was important was getting these knives quickly to a customer who had ordered maybe 30 kinves in the past month. If one man had made both blades he could not have come closer than these two. But, we didn't get the mark we wanted.

We did not ask for matching scabbards, only a right and left, and this is what we got but to me they were noticeably different.

They cannot outguess me and I cannot outguess them. I suppose there is some advantage to that but offhand what can it be?

BTW, notice the "habaki bolsters." These seem to be showing up on more and more Bir Gorkha new production. Could this be "Everst Katana" influence?

I won't be wearing both of them. One is for a left-handed unorthodox rabbi who is into martial arts, and who also thinks that gardening is "rest," so this may end up as his "Shabbat khukuri."

As usual, Jim, gorgeous photography! I love the way the light is on the blades without glare. These are two very fine examples of BirGhorka's best work.
Bill, you should keep a special file of JM's pics...when newbies want to know what an HI knife looks like, refer them to the appropriate Mattis photo and ZOOM! instant sale!

Most of my images are direct scans - the object on the flatbed scanner with my magic blue construction paper behind it. I position a mirror polished blade so that it scans "too dark" and crank up the brightness, keeping contrast low. I can brighten a near-black image, but I can't do anything for something that is washed out.
