Yes, another lockup question

I know, I know, not another one.

Received my first Seb today. Small 21 Micarta. Lockup appears to be approximately 20% at best. Less than ideal based on what I've read, but I'm assuming it is just fine.

The question is, so long as I have solid lockup everything is gravy, good to go - correct?

And a side note about thumb flipping - ha! This thing is so tight there is no way in the world I could thumb flick this knife. Very tight, even after lube.

Best picture I could take.

Looks good to me. In fact, that's what most people would consider ideal. But, yes, as long as the lockup is nice and secure, that's the most important aspect.

Nice choice with the micarta BTW.

CRK must be reading these threads thinking: "These folks just can't make up their minds. First, there are all sorts of posts regarding 'over engagement' and so we ease up a bit and have them lock up with a bit less travel, and now folks are posting that it doesn't lock up quite far enough over. We just can win!"

Looks perfect to me! You want a little "wear in room" in a frame or liner lock. Just as long as it locks up solid I would be very happy with this one.,,vwb.

^^^^^^Very true Bucky... Mr Reeve is probably scratching his head. Thought I'd ask though. I'm new to the Sebenza.

I hope you didn't think I was making light of you question because I wasn't at all, I was just trying to point out how frustrating it must be from CRK's perspective to read some of these threads.

Regarding your comment on the opening action: don't worry, with time it will loosen up. You just need to open and close it a few hundred times to loosen it up a bit and break it in. Many Sebenzas are very stiff right out of the box.

The knife is completely defective and unsafe. Please send it to me for secure disposal.

;)

Just give it a light wrist flick open and see if it seats the stop pin further increasing lockup. If not loosen the stop pin screw a little bit and re-tighten it, then try flicking it open again. If the lockup is still the same call it good; if it does engauge a little further then it was just an issue of it not being fully seated the first time around. It's a win win situation from where you're at it can only go from good to better.;)

Nice way to flaunt your new Sebenza :D

The lockup looks great. As long as when it's open, it feels like it's welded that way, you're good. The action should get a little more flickable as it wears in.

about the flicking it open, it will take some time for it to wear.

Just open and close for abit and it will get smoother.

For me, it took about 3 days to break it in.

I wouldn't feel warm and fuzzy about that.....i like 75-80%. :) atleast 60%.....snap that thing like you got a set and see if it sets deeper. ;)

Post back when the blade loosens up and let us know if it sets deeper...my guess is that it will.

Actually, given the difference in tang/lockbar geometry and the hardened lockbar face, I think that CRK RILs knives need a whole lot less room to wear in than most others, and I think this is why this question comes up so often. It's a natural question, but the answer in almost every case is "it's fine."

By CRK standards, the knife above is actually quite light on the engagement.

I agree. :thumbup::thumbup:

LMAO -

In time, grasshoppers, you will understand.
50% +/- 5% for the small Sebs and Mnandi..
70% +/- 10% for the large Sebs..

Safety first, always..

You'll be opening and closing this one for decades to get it to wear to 80%

I envy you :)

PS: I am not joking. I'm bordering on hating you :)

Okay, several more days in, opening/closing watching TV and the lockup has improved to close to 40%.

However, this knife is just ridiculously stiff/tight in the opening. I even tried some Breakfree LP (not CLP, just the lube) which appears to be of lower viscosity than the TetraLube (flouropolymer lube)... still tight. I've opened/closed this knife probably a few hundred times and worked the blade open and closed several hundred more times!

I keep saying it will get better, but I guess in my case it will take a long time.

If you hold the lock bar open and operate the blade, does the blade move freely?

Just seeing if the blade is causing the resistance or the lock bar tension.
