Actually the challenge was for myself. Seems like the blades I forge look pretty much the same to me anymore. I had mentioned to Tai about wanting to do one of the e-neps but didn't want to infringe on something he just got started on. He had no problem with it so this is my first attempt. I started with a piece of 60 grade that was 7" X 3/4. Same size piece thats in the picture. The two hammers in the picture were all that was used besides the anvil. The blade on the e-nep is 9 1/2" and 14" overall. Actually I'm selling kits for these. For 5.99 you can have your very own piece of rebar ready to turn into an e-nep. :101

I really like that blade shape, looks like a really good camp knife. What kind of handle are you gonna put on it? Any guard?

Terry, I'm still not sure about the handle yet. I may turn it into a threw tang and bamboo has entered my mind as a handle. Most likely no guard.

E-nep - traditional bush knife of Thailand...hard to get (used to have one) but an awesome design!

I like what I see....can't wait to see it finished.

How long did it take you to pound that out, and how hot were you forging?

I've got a chunk of rebar like that, and while it's been almost a year since I last forged a pice of metal (I really need to fix that), it hardly moved under my 3lb hammer.

Thanks!

BTW- the blade looks purdy! Can't wait to see the finished product!

I never pay to much attention to time when I forge but I'd say it was less than 2 hours to forge whats in the picture. You can do it with a 3 pound hammer but its going to take longer. The larger hammer in the photo is right about 6 pounds.

nice hammer work Ray !!! How well does the rebar respond to heat treating ?? What method will you use ??

All rebar is along way from being the same. The rebar that I've been using I got about 12 years ago when I worked construction. Its all 60 grade but even with that it can very. I have good luck hardening it in fast oil like Tex type B and doing several draws from 350 to 375.

I had no idea you could harden rebar. AND, it seems that my hammer is too light. Thanks for the read. It was VERY educational.

Did I mention that I like your blade there. Very nice!!!

Say Raymond, looks like you use the old "water on the anvil/hammer trick" to blow off the scale from the piece your forging. True? What have you found out about it, less scale in the steel??

Robert, It does seem to make a difference with the scale. I hadn't done it for a few years but when I started doing a lot of the saw steel I found it was pretty much a must. The high nickel content of the steel produces a nickel carbide scale thats a bear to grind off with brand new cerramic belts.

OK. Detail the 'old trick' if you don't mind. I was wondering why the hammer looked wet.

I think they're referring to the Japanese sword-forger's trick of mopping water on the anvil, dipping the hammer in water and forging "wet"? Supposed to keep the scale off...

I'd vote for keeping the rebar origins showing on the handle.
Thanks for the picture.

Raymond, I remember a post of yours from maybe 3 or 4 years ago where you had forged out several little knives from rebar for a KITH of some sort. So see, you've done it before !!

I think you were referring to the rebar knife seeds. Thats been awhile.
