I work for Fastenal, and doing so I get to meet all kinds of very cool people. At one of my customers, I work with the guys in maintenance. The company makes and molds glass, think a 100 foot by 200 foot factory, with 50 foot arched ceiling with about 10 furnaces running at 2000F+ 24 hours a day 7 days a week, hot glass being handled, loud, YES VERY COOL. They were scrapping out an old machine that was a blanchard grinder modified for lapping glass. Well it was wore out and had been in the factory for 30+ years, and weighed close to two tons. Now to my point, I got there just as they were moving the surrounding circular cast iron rim. It is about a 6 foot diameter, with a 4 foot hole in the center, the top rim that is about a foot+ wide is about 1 inch thick, and there is a steel rim welded in to the center circle that is also 1 inch thick. They had to cut it into 2 pieces to get it out of the factory door, and then they scrapped it. OH NO! But no, OH YES. The one maintenance guy who is a VERY good friend of mine spoke with the guys at the scrapyard, and they agreed to hold onto both pieces, and to sell to me at 10 cents below current scrap price. I went and got the first half 2 weeks ago, and called this morning to see if they still had the other half and WHEW they did!

Now I won't say what I will be making with it, but think what you would do with a 6 foot outer diameter with a 4 foot inner diameter cut out of the center, 1 foot wide flat surface that is 1 inch thick? Fans of King Arthur prepare yourself :D

I see a workbench with all of your grinders/finishing tools pointed towards the INSIDE. You climb in and just turn around until your knife is done :D

How much do you think it weighs?

Was it cast or machined?

Serious metal:eek::cool:

GOOD IDEA DEKER! Set it low and put a spinny chair in the middle!

I forgot to mention, as is before any legs are put on it each separate half weighs in at 630 pounds, both together 1260.

Fred, the whole thing was cast and then machined perfectly flat, but it is probably not PERFECTLY flat anymore after having glass lapped on it for 30 years, but it still is very flat. You cannot see with the naked eye any sort of dips or whoops in the surface.

Sam,
That sounds like the ultimate work/welding/forging table.
Good deal, bro.

Make a nice big welding table, mounted with a couple of large vises.

Here is pictures of the half I picked up today, now I have to work out ideas for the legs and then pitch those ideas to gallery owners.

These are the sides, on the other half they are opposite, the 2 steps are on the other side and the one step is on the other.

The rust is only surface rust, no pitting yet I will dowse it with WD40 to keep it from rusting anymore.

Damn that is a big piece. Nice score. I need to get me a nice big steel welding / work table just don't really have the room for it yet.

If I had a workbench tool mountig platform that weighed tons I wouldnt have to
bolt everything thru the walls, nice score.
Ken.
