I've watched a lot of these threads and seen a lot of shelters built. For the most part I'm not impressed. Most of them look thrown together just so the person can say they "built a shelter." Bullshit. I've yet to see a decent debris hut or even a lean-to that would truly serve as a shelter on a cold or rainy night. RAT Cutlery is willing to give away away a new RAT Pack with RC6 or RC5 (winner's choice) to the best shelter built using a RAT Cutlery knife. This contest will be judged solely by Mike and myself. And since no one follows the damn rules around here, there are no rules except using a RAT Cutlery knife if a knife is needed. Chat all you want but just understand that we reserve the right not to award any prize if the only shelters shown here are just thrown together like the rest we've seen. ;) No sense in asking questions about this contest since we will probably just avoid them. Use your best judgement on what you think we would like. I want to hear about your water tests and some detailed construction photos. Time limit: We will run this contest at least until the end of November but after that we may close the thread and judge it at anytime. In other words, we may let it run until Christmas or we may shut it down the 1st day of December.

I love it - This will force me to get out and about. Thanks for the opportunity. I know exactly the place that will serve me and I've got the tree in mind. I like your no nonsense approach

Great concept! I have to admit to being a shelter-building noob (not too many places near me where I can build one) but I'll see if I can muster the time and a location to try at it. Either way I look forward to seeing the entries!

I might be up for this if my knee holds out, I would like to see constructive criticism in the end as to what you liked or didn't like, this could be a great learning experience as well!!

I didn't read the rules, but I'm in.

I read the first part, but it confused me so i gave up. I sent Jeff an email asking him how I can win the contest and get my Z06 prize that was offered, but it needs to be converted to right hand drive as I'm overseas. I'll let you know when I get a reply and post it here.

Hopefully it'll snow a good amount before this ends. I have ideas :)

There is one rule that I forgot to mention: No one under 18 is allowed to enter the contest. Also, anyone doing this contest does so at their own risk. We will not be held responsible if you get hurt!

As for how to build a proper shelter, if I were entering this contest and didn't really understand how, I would do a little research on the subject first. A good debris shelter is easy to build and you can just about build it without ever using a knife. You might also try a swamp bed with a poncho lean-to and some insulating materials on the bed. Just some thoughts. Take your time and build it right.

Can I use my tent?

Sure, this is your contest and there are no rules. If you really want to show your capability at building shelter, you can use your motor home if you want. You can haul 2x4s, plywood and shingles out to the woods and build a cabin if you want (uh oh, that might be too much work!). Move in a double wide trailer. I don't care. Hell, just take a picture of your bedroom and submit that! :D

Just so you have an idea of how simple this contest is to win, here's a debris hut we built during a class. Now, this one still needs about another foot of debris dumped on top to make it warm and waterproof but you get the idea.

Very cool contest. Although if the guys taking your Peru survival class next week take any pictures, they are probably going to learn to make better shelters than the rest of us :) .

I guess the Texas State Parks are going to frown on me hacking down trees to build a shelter, I might have to find a place a little more wild -- it sounds like Horn Dog has a pretty nice back yard for playing in! :D I may have to get out a map to see if there is a decent place near me I could try it, not that I would have any chance of making the winning shelter LOL.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone's entries though. Cool contest  .

No need to hack anything if you build a debris shelter.
