Yet another contest.

Not sure about your area but usually evergreens shed their leaves every so often and they would be on the ground. What's on the ground there dead? Anything? Or is it just a desert?

Evergreens do drop their needles. You'd just have a hell of a time piling them and getting them to stick, depending on the species. White pine is easy, but piling blue spruce needles would be harder than sand! Fortunately evergreen boughs would work quite nicely, regardless of species. :)

If you build the skeleton right, you could indeed pile sand on a debris type shelter and make it stick. What I would do with these small Evergreen needles is make a very tight skeleton frame than start piling the needles from the bottom. If they're wet or damp, that's even better. The only problem with using boughs would be it might cause too many air gaps in the construction, thus require a lot more material and be almost impossible to heat up inside. I don't know this for sure since I have never worked with that material.

Leaves tend to be sparse around where I am, well the amount of leaves I need, I will have to think about some other options, The thing is...... you don't need a knife to make a good debris hut that is functional......so If someone makes one without a knife does that hurt or help them In this contest?

Nope. Doesn't hurt them in this contest at all. As for debris huts, I'll take any rotting material found on the ground as long as it lays flat ;)

This is purely a subjectively judged contest. We may award the prize to the newcomer who tried the hardest even if their shelter wasn't the best. We may decide to have more than one prize. We may decide that none of the entries are worth a damn. We may decide that we don't even like our own rules and award the prize to someone who used a Chinese POS gas station folder to build their shelter. Hell, it may even be the best looking pop-up camper. Who knows? I don't...yet.

White Pine lies nice and flat but it's sticky as hell if it's green. Spruce doesn't like cooperating at all. might make a good outer layer, though. I'd probably stay as far away from cut live pine as possible and use only the dead stuff where any pitch content has hardened and dried. Pitch on your hands can make you start blistering REAL fast if you try to keep working. If you get pitch on you it's best to find some dirt or dust you can rub your hands in to cling to the pitch and keep it from rubbing.

well I might have a use for all the bamboo around my area after all......

bamboo is awesome if its rather large!
I made a shelter by splitting the bamboo and laying it concave side up
then covering the gaps between with a piece layed convex side up
it was like natural terra cotta...

I wouldn't be surprised if those terracotta tiles were directly inspired by bamboo. In fact, I'd be surprised if it wasn't!

lots of good ideas floating around here- it is good to find an active forum where people actually have something constructive to say! (i know that didn't help anybody in their quest for the perfect shelter, but i thought it might be worth mentioning)

No problem with entering multiple shelters right? this no rules thing is confusing. :jerkit:

Want to try building a debris shelter out of snow. Not like an igloo, just a frame waterproofed with bark, then snow piled on top. And then cut something with a knife somewhere along the line.

those bamboo terracotta tiles are brilliant.

Why are you asking me questions? I don't even really know what the rules are or will be :D

Can I enter this contest? Do I have to have a RAT pack number? How do I get a RAT pack number? Why have you not shipped my RAT pack knife yet? Do I have to pay for the RAT pack knife? Why is the white paint on my ceiling turning a brown color? At what age can I draw social security? Can I get my RAT Pack knife in D2 with purple handles? How do I get a RAT Pack knife? Do I have to pay for it? What's a RAT Pack number? Can anyone tell me where I live? What is Bladeforums. When are you going to ship my RAT pack knife?

In all seriousness, build as many shelters as you want. Use a track loader if you want. Pour a concrete floor in it. Doesn't matter on this contest.

Can I enter this contest?

Why yes. Yes you can.

Do I have to have a RAT pack number?

Why yes. Yes you do.

How do I get a RAT pack number?

Simple, painless, one-time fee of $5,000 US (+3 % for PayPal). Contact anyone who already has one. I'm sure they'll hook you up.

Why have you not shipped my RAT pack knife yet?

We have. It'll be waiting for you at the corner of Hollywood and Vine tonight. Be there about 2 a.m. Come alone. In your underwear.

Do I have to pay for the RAT pack knife?

Oh, you will. Believe me, you will.

Why is the white paint on my ceiling turning a brown color?

The troll that lives in your attack is having tummy troubles.

At what age can I draw social security?

Mentally, never.

Can I get my RAT Pack knife in D2 with purple handles?

If you really want it bad enough. And you're willing to live with what wanting it that badly says about you.

What's a RAT Pack number?

Like you don't know. You know you want one. All the cool people have one.

Can anyone tell me where I live?

After tonight, in some Hollywood freak's basement. Good news is, not for long...

What is Bladeforums.

An elite society that secretly runs the world. Like Illuminati, but with insanely sharp objects.

When are you going to ship my RAT pack knife?

Pretty sure we already covered that one. You're goin' back to Cali, cowboy. Saddle up.

There ya' go. Gotcha covered. Anything else I can help with. :D

We don't have trees or foliage around here! Gah. I have a new camera on the way, a canon a650... man I need to pony up and get in on a few of these contests, they just never seem to line up to when i have time to get outside. Fall colors are awesome here right now. I'll see what I can put together.
