Yet another contest.

Even when this contest is done i hope people keep posting pics. its awesome to see the diffrent shelters and read the storys and making process behind them.

Good news, Tue. night is going to get down to 25 and Wednesday night 28.
Waiting to see about rain, but one of those nights is best to sleep in the debris hut.
Finally. :)

Getting close to wrapping this contest up and judging it...

you guys rock! have never even thought about a debris shelter much less built one. but have a week of camping coming up next week so it will be one of the items on agenda. the pals im going with at first thought why? now at least one of em are into it after i forwarded them some of the youtube vids. just wanted to say thanks. being on this forum has really got me thinking and scheming for the next opportunity to try some new things out. everyone of ya deserves a prize!

Ok, contest is over with however this thread will stay open for discussion. Good work all!I will be posting a poll on the top 7 for everyone to vote on.

wait, now its an essay question! oh crap im gona fail for sure.... i suck at writing papers! Im glad you decided to leave thread open, we can all learn tons by looking at everyones designs.

I've really learned alot form this thread. You made an old man like me wana get out and try one of these.

Saw some kids making a snow cave out of a pile of frozen plowed snow tonight.

Maybe we should try that next.

actually, I got caught in B-more by the blizzard of 96 and did very similar to that. (36" of wet snow in 24 hours)
I started with a pile of plow snow and started tunneling, then when digging out my truck, I cut blocks and started stacking them into an igloo shape to finish up the structure.
All was going well until the neighborhood kids discovered me and my project - at which point it was stress tested beyond tolerances and became an open top snowball fort...

OK here's the deal..... Send me a RC-5 or 6 and I will build you the best looking shelter you've ever seen!!!! Since I don't have a 4, 5, 6 or heck even a 3 at this point I can't show you the BEST EVER shelter!!!!! :-) I know you're tempted!!!! C'mon!! Just Do It.....

This has been a really interesting read - the next time I go camping I will look into shelter building. I probably wont build a shelter & I will have my tent, bedroll & sleeping bag - but I will have a look around to see what materials are about and think about what it would take to build a shelter.

If I have time and want to give myself a challenge then I might actually build a shelter even if I still opt to sleep in the tent. Building a warm dry shelter from the debris lying around the forest floor is a really interesting idea!

Arg! Just as I discover this contest and am back from a 2 week bush trip (with pics of teh shelter to end all shelters) I discover it's over!

sorry the contest is over but this post was left us so we can continue learning from each other. please post the pics and a discription if you get time.

Here's a link to my photobucket album.

In it you can see the pics of my open front shelter. Starting with a frame of sticks, we jammed pine into the highest point to help waterproof it. Then laid pieces of wood against the outside and finished it off with birchbark.

You can see the rolled up cattail mat which I slept on that night, as well as the other mat which was used as a door that night to stop unwanted rain.

hey man just checked out the pics, great job!!!!! i love the cat tail mat, thats a great idea. i may have to try that out some time. How is cat tail to eat? ive never tried it.
