My wife got me one of the "pathfinder" G-shocks three years ago. The digital compass is pretty neat and always seems accurate, but the four batteries inside had to be replaced after two years. I'd go with the solar power
 
I remember some time a go G Shock watch was dropped from a helicopter (I don't recall the exact altitude, but about 1000 ft sounds about right) to see if the watch was as good as the claims were.

Did it work after the drop test? Yes!

Even more surprising, as a "control" for the drop test, a standard, non-G Shock Casio was also dropped from the helicopter, at the same height.

Surprisingly enough, that one worked too.

Casio makes good watches.
