Yet another grinder motor help thread

I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box, but I think you could get an AC to DC converter and do it; if you want to give this motor a try. :)

for 12 volts i would get an old battery charger and hook it up or go solar with a few 12 volt deep cycle batteries hooked up. free power to run your grinder would be worth it.

for 24 volts you might be able to find a 24 volt power supply somewhere to power it. maybe a battery charger power supply would even work if you can find one that has multiple voltage capability. i wouldnt run it on any higher voltage than what it says.

As rarely as I grind, with a nice flat commercial roof, solar may actually work.

Richard, putting the detent ball in now so I should be sending them out Monday. I'd send them this afternoon, but Dave wants to see it this weekend.

My thoughts:

This is not a good choice...or even close for a belt grinder. It's a highly specialized motor that doesn't lend itself to a stationary industrial machine.

The show-stopper is the speed. 8000 rpm is just way too fast for belt grinders.....and if you run it slower..say at 4000 rpm...then you reduce the power proportionally.

The other problem is the voltage...12/24DC. I don't like DC motors as I feel they are perishable...the more you use them ..the more they wear out. Also, I don't know where I would get reliable 12/24 VDC power source....or why bother when I have 110VAC in the nearest wall outlet.

I'm sure that if you bought this motor...you will end up buying another one in the future to replace it...so save the money and skip this step.

There are many other choices that are better candidates in my opinion.

...these are just my opinions....

While I'm not opposed to using a different motor, I was focusing on this motor being 2HP at 12VDC.

Detent ball is installed and in the right spot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you can always use the motor as a wind generator if anything else. i'm glad you have the detent ball in place. i bet you have an endless supply of them now too :D

Not endless, but I certainly have plenty of them. I probably sent over 100 to the recyclers last week. I took this opportunity to replace the stop in with a larger one and grind the lock at a 6° angle. Closes much better now.
