yet another new face

A lot of good thinking there. Let me make a firm recommendations now myself.

For the office get a Leatherman Wave. (I have the Supertool for years now. Does the whole job, tougher than nails. I hammer them with it.) You described a variety of jobs that a SAK or multitool would excel at and a blade alone would be missing the point. The Wave has blades that open & close one-handed so they are totally convenient, but being a toolkit format will not panic people. And you will have real pliers and screwdrivers handy, not to mention saw and file.

For the construction site and self-defense get the Benchmade 710 Axis Lock. This is a tough knife with a blade almost 4" long, a lock that is -- to put it mildly -- unlikely to fail, ever. (I've got the BM 730 Ares, a comparable but smaller knife. Excellent lockup and ergonomics.) The 710 also has a beautifully designed handle that shouldn't shift in your grip, but isn't so overdesigned that it might not fit. (I don't like finger-grooves -- my hands are too wide, and they rarely fit me.)

The other guys haven't recommended losers either! I think you'll like whatever you get. Just don't try to buy one knife to do it all, or buy knives that overlap so much they leave some jobs out.

Check out the Individual Knives for Sale/Trade forum for a BM 710 -- you vcan get a nice deal on a used one which for your purposes is ideal anyway.

Once you get to work with all this metal, consider a Spyderco Sharpmaker ... uh oh ... that's a whole other thread.

Hi Lev, and welcome to the forums. I'm going to take a different track and suggest the Spyderco Native. It will serve you well.
