Yet Another Reason To Dislike Clips

Another reason to not trust pocket clips.

While riding my bike, my new last month Ontario RAT 1 decided to vacate my RF pocket. :(
I did not hear it hit the ground, which I should have, since I was on the street or sidewalk/bike route the entire ride.

I had a feeling I should have put that knife in the cigar box, and left it home.
I never should have carried it, or enjoyed using it. :(

The two slipjoints in the same pocket don't fall out when pedaling ...

Oh well ... "live" and learn, I guess.
IF I ever get another knife with a pocket clip, I sure as heck will not trust said clip, no matter who made the knife. :(

This sounds more like a reason to drive a car than not to carry a knife. :D

Sorry for your loss though. Always sucks to lose something, especially when you're still in the honeymoon phase with it.

When riding a bicycle or dirt-bike I carry my folder 'Mexican Carry' like a handgun, on the inside of my pants clipped to my waist. Never lost one yet as you can feel if it's there or not, and the crouched body position naturally keeps it in place. It's comfortable if on the right angle right in your leg crease for a full a size Emerson.

I actually carry like this often when I don't want to have a pocket clip visible, or if I'm wearing shorts or track pants.

I keep pretty strong clip tension on mine. I’ve noticed I always have to bend the clip to create the secure tension I’m looking for.

I take the clip of and clamp it with cloth in a vice, bend it little by little till I’m happy.

I think you meant to title this "Yet Another Reason To Drive A Car."

Anyway, it's not like an un-clipped knife would necessarily have done any better. Your major issue here is not one of hardware, but of choosing the right pocket or method of carrying the item while on a bike.

At least it was an inexpensive knife.

I tighten all the clips on my knives. I like a tight clip. Most companies don't have a tight enough clip for my needs and/or wants. No problem, takes only a few minutes to tighten a clip. Never lost one that I've tightened and I've done some a lot more rigorous things than riding a bike.

Well, sure, driving a car may have prevented such a loss, but the real issue is the carry method rather than the biking part. I carry a knife with me whenever I'm on my bike but it's always in a zippered hip pocket (or my biking bag) rather than the front pocket, I doubt any bike commuter would ever need fast enough deployment of a folding knife that clipping it in the front pocket is any better than a much safer and probably more comfortable method like a zippered pocket or in-bag carry.

It's not like you're moving slow enough for anybody to admire your knife while you pass.

Really? You're blaming this on the clip? Was it previously bent?

I don't know what I'd do without a pocket clip on a modern folder, hell that's one of the beautiful traits that a modern folder possesses. I can't stand loose stuff in my pocket, especially if I'm doing something fairly active.

Oh well, at least it was a Rat 1. Not saying anything bad about a Rat as I own quite a few and they rank fairly high on my EDC list.
Just look at it this way, it could have been a much more expensive knife.

The only time this happened was when I lost a $5 knife as a teenager riding on my friends go-kart, but I can see this turning you off of pocket clips for sure since you really liked the knife.

I have a small bag attached to my bicycle that holds my knife, a tire patch kit and a small air pump.

Personally, I've not had a problem with clips while cycling, even after what id call a pretty fair amount of experience.

I commuted to work by bike, for 4.5 years. In that time, I literally did not drive to work ever, rain or shine. I carried my edc in my right rear pocket every single day, and never once had it fall out, or feel loose. And that was over many thousands of miles of cycling.

I did reach back and check it from time to time though, if I could feel it wasn't right up against the edge of the edge of the pocket.

That said, I have had a very loose clipped knife fall out of my front pocket though, so its not that clips are infallible.

To be frank, your post reads a bit like you were kind of wanting a reason to dislike clips/clipped knives. That's totally a fine opinion of course, I just wanted to mention that I've not had problems in similar circumstances, so its not that bike riding always immediately results in a lost knife :).

cheers.

My knives feel much more secure in the pocket with the clips than without, especially when i ride my bike.

Allthough i can't help myself from checking for it every so often.

Not a clip fan here. If biking, I would make sure a knife was either zipped or buttoned in a pocket so it could not come out. If it has a lanyard hole, paracord it to your pants.

You could always dummy cord the knife to your bike.

I have to second this suggestion. Attatch a cord loop of cord through the lanyard hole and then attatch that loop of cord to somewhere on yourself. “Ie a pants belt loop”

I know that when biking you likely won’t have pants with belt loops. You can use a longer dummy cord and just have it around your waist.

Maybe ... But, personally, I can't see spending nearly $3.00 and up for a gallon of fuel, plus however many thousands of dollars a year for car payments, insurance, registration, parking, tolls, maintenance and other costs it takes to buy and support a car.
To be honest, I can think of a lot of things I'd rather spend that money on. Heck, I decided back in 1995 that it was not worth a major portion of my income (all costs considered) to have a car.

I still carry knives when I ride. A Buck 110 on the belt, and a couple slipjoints in my pocket. Like I said, the slipjoints don't fall out of my pants pocket when I ride.
