Here's is the email exchange. I have removed the names and email addresses to protect privacy, but I felt this needed to be posted because it is pure idiocy.

XXXXXX,

Please tell your friend we would appreciate it if he would not buy any more of our knives. If he wants to throw knives then buy throwing knives. What he is doing is nothing short of idiocy. Our knives are made for professional use in many environments. Intentional abuse, such as your friend is doing, will eventually cause us to not guarantee our knives with the excellent No Questions Asked warranty that we have now. We would rather your friend spend his money elsewhere. It’s a shame that people intentionally abuse gear because they know they can get it replaced for free. I’m not impressed by your email or your friend’s “skills.”

Best regards,

Jeff Randall

Subject: RE: izula sheath

Your knives are the best. I’ve bought two izula’s and two RC 3’s. given away one of each for a gift. My friends and I abuse the hell out of them while back packing. We enjoy throwing knives into trees out in the woods to kill time from making shelter’s and my buddy broke his in half while throwing his RC 3 for about the 1000th time. He sent it in and your company sent him back a brand new one no questions. Your warranty and the fact that they’re made in the USA was honestly the reason I started buying the knives. Best on the planet no question.

Wow. Good for you! And even better, good for all of us. I don't think I'll ever come close to breaking one, but if I do, I don't want things to be ruined 'cause of one or two abusers.

Damn........ what else need, or can be; said????? :)
[Although I am sure plenty will follow.... ;) ]

Wow, you are way too polite.

Just so you know, if you guys ever pull your "Full Replacement Warrantee", I would still buy and use your products. I did not buy the ESEE-5, 3, 4, or Izula because of the warrantee....

As long as that warrantee is around, these idiots will continue to abuse and take advantage of you guys. I would love to smash those asshats' heads into a tree and see if they develop some sort of a clue after a few dozen hits..

We hardly ever respond harshly to an end user /customer, but this is plain foolish. I don't want this guy on my team under any circumstances, whether it's camping in a state park or traveling through remote jungles. Anyone that intentionally abuses a life saving tool because they simply don't care and know they will get a replacement for free is not someone I hold in high regards on any level. We have a NO QUESTIONS ASKED warranty against abuse for the times that our knives may be called upon to get someone out of a pinch, save a life, etc. Example: you lock yourself out of your house and need to pry your door open. You break the knife. We replace it because it was being used as a last ditch tool and it broke under "honorable" use. There is NOTHING honorable about throwing our knives into trees because you know if it breaks you will get another. We don't want these type of people as customers. Period. Wished we could weed the idiots out but it's impossible.

Jeff do you keep a customer list of folks who have returned knives/reason why/and replacement...maybe you ought to if not , not trying to overload patricia but worth keeping a record of

Idiots.... I have an Idea, how about you tell that guy off and I'll buy an ESEE 3 today so then you won't have lost any net customers :)

Patricia and Becky both keep records of warranty repalcements. Again, the warranty is not going away or being changed, but we fully intend to start posting up such idiocy in a public format. If someone breaks our knife batoning through wood (and it happens) then we repace it and never bitch even though most manufacturers consider that abuse. If someone pries open a car door or house door and breaks our knife. No problem. We don't complain even though it is abuse. We would even replace a knife that someone intentionally broke testing it and not bitch. Our warranty is truly no questions asked and we replace the knife, period. All we ask is people be honest and not be idiots.

throwing his RC 3 for about the 1000th time

So the warranty is good up to 1000 throws :) lol

Good for you Jeff.

You guys have the best warranty in the business in my opinion, and out of respect and appreciation for that, I don’t do idiotic things with my knives. If I break one in the process of doing something reasonable, I have no problems using the warranty as that is one of the reasons I first started looking in to ESEE. But admittedly misusing and abusing knives because the mfr will give you another one is bullshit.

Common sense need not always apply. Some would argue “Well if it isn’t REALLY no questions asked, don’t advertise it as such.” Okay, let’s change it to “If you break it any way other than being a total dumbass because you don’t care and know you’ll get another knife…..we will replace it.”

there is alot of dumbass people in the world, if you don't watch out for them, they will take you as being one of there kind.

I've always had a good experience with Esee knives and there customer service, but then again I treat my knives with respect....

. All we ask is people be honest and not be idiots.

It unfortunately is asking too much...

Maybe a disclaimer;

Thank you for purchasing our knife. We will replace this knife under any circumstance should it break while being used in an intelligent manner. If you are too stupid to own this knife, please send it back to the retailer for a full refund. If you do not agree with our warrantee, feel free to unsheath the knife and fall on it, if it breaks while you are falling on it, we will gladly replace it for the new owner.

Can you believe I'm in retail:D

I love the No Questions Asked Warranty - it is, without a doubt, the best in the business.

There's nothing I hate to see more than idiots taking advantage of what is an excellent and honorable warranty, and a company that stands behind their product.

~~ but we fully intend to start posting up such idiocy in a public format.
I was just about to suggest this, but ya' beat me to it.

I honestly hope you follow through with it in a way that the absolute intentional lunacy of some is documented as a "wall of shame" or something negative..... to "recognize" those that qualify. :)

My .99........

Wow. The things that people do because of a warranty. The warranty is nice to have, but if you break a knife intentionally, or abusing it, there is no real reason it should be replaced. If it breaks batoning, or while whittling wood, I could see that being a legitimate cause. Throwing is just a stupid thing to do with a knife that isn't meant to be thrown.

This guy is obviously none too bright. First of all, why would he think that you would be amused by his story of abusing tools that you clearly take pride in to the point of an unconditional guaranty?
Second, if he was doing stupid stuff like that with his knives why would he brag about it? Your policy is no questions asked, so if you are not asking why is he offering up his lame story of disrespecting your work and products???

No questions asked means just that, but we reserve the right to have a sticky thread with the subject line ESEE's BELIEVE IT OR NOT and post all the idiot warranty issues in that thread. Again, if you break a knife from abuse because that abuse needed to be put upon that tool, then we will NEVER bitch or complain.

The point of this whole thing is we are more about learning and teaching than we are gear. While we make our living selling knives, the foundation of our company comes from teaching, learning and experince in the wilds. When I read an email like this (or the email from the guy in Canada that made a spear and threw the spear 43 times before our knife broke), it disappoints me on how un-educated most folks are about the wilds, bushcraft and woodland operations. Not only do they not seem to know anything but they turn their boredom to stupid shit instead of learning new skills. Some people just don't need a sharp tool in their hands. Period.

The warranty is what brought me to the table, but the good cookin' is what made me stay.

Throwing knives is a sport best reserved for a throwing knife, not a hard tempered, hard use knife. Most folks are not educated enough to know the difference between a flexible temper and a hard temper.

Glad you replaced it, glad you said what you did, glad to have ESEE knives in the world. Hate people taking advantage of your awesome warranty. I'll pick up a couple more knives after the first of the year, to offset the loss of customers. :D

I use knives for cutting, once I tried to pry with a Buck 110 and broke the tip. I sent it in and they reground it. I think that a warranty is great but there has to be a big expense involved when peopler intentionally destroy equipment so that they can show it on videos.
