Yet another which knife thread.

I have never used D2, but I have heard several people say it will take a lousy edge and hold it forever. Others say it takes a great edge and holds it forever, but I have never heard anyone say they are easy to sharpen. If by "takes an edge like little else" you mean it is easy to sharpen, I think you are mistaken. Someone who has experience with it will probably come on here and clear this up, but that is what I have heard.

I rotate my D2 TAK, F1, SY Hook/S6/DM and mora (911) in my car and usually (but not always) bring the pack/B.O.B. in everynight, and I must say I do feel better with the mora in the car as opposed to the others (for theft). The mora works great and is light and does the job. As for D2 sharpening, not as easy as others but fine. It does hold an edge but so do my others, I don't let them go dull. If you can get a Fallkniven or a TAK, you can get a mora too, to feel em out, I did and like em all :)

I see...I think. I was looking at a RAT 5 or a KABAR Impact D2. I'd love a an F1, but they aren't cheap. No I've got my eye on the SOG Seal Pup and Pup Elite, although a lot of people aren't crazy about stainless steel in fixed or heavy use blades. Essentiall, I've gone from two options to too many! Let's just stick with the steel choice on its own for now, though.

(throws another monkey wrench in) I think I got my F1 from knifeworks, Rodger is a good guy and a nice price, there are deals out there, like even just the blank.

You're right Dantor. Knifeworks has great prices on the F1. It seems the site with the best prices varies by item. I was looking at thebladeshop.com and soonerstateknives.com. Of course, there's the BM Griptillian fixed in 154CM. The allure of the F1's VG-10, however, is strong.

Ok, lets simplify: For the money, F1 or a RAT, either 5 or TAK-1? Common question, indeed, but always worth attacking afresh.

These are my next choices. Knifeworks rules!

I did rule out the fixed Grip because of the handle. I am not sure how I would like that. I know I would love the F1 and Rats.

The RATs look like they have the nicest grip, for sure. The F1 looks less so at first glance, but the Grip's is kinda narrow, which would suck on a fixed blade-i want it to feel kinda hefty, or else it feels cheap. Now, about the steel...D2 wouldn't be manufactured or used as much as it is if it was junk, and a lot of people love tool steel. WHY? No one ever gives a clear answer. VG-10, though...that, and S30V seem to be the unofficial god-steels on this forum. By the way, this is the site I get my steel information from:

I have both and to me the F1 feels the best in my hand, like it was made for me and the balance is superb. If I had to pick from the two, it would be the F1. add a sheath from normark and you'd rock!

The F1 is already about all i can afford right now. I sheath has to be pretty awful to consider getting a new one-its the knife in my hand that matters. Of course its differnet of its for concealment, but thats an entirely different issue.

Just as long as hearing isn't believing. We do get into the habit here of snapping off the occasional smart remark, but that isn't responsive. :)

I like D2. I have Bob Dozier knives that have seen some good use, and a Camillus CUDA Maxx that's been used hard and still slices well. It's not just the steel, it's the potential of the steel as brought out by makers and manufacturers who know how to get the best out of it.

All the higher-end steels profit by being sharpened on the proper equipment, like diamond stones, and maintained before they get too dull.

That is exactly where I am at with Fallkniven. Great knife, OK sheath. The knife is $92 with shipping. Then to get a sheath is around $55-75 with shipping. So now the knife really costs $147-167.

It seems that there is no easy choice here. I trust the steel in RAT's, so i know i wouldn't be getting anything inferior products from them. But an F1 is...well, an F1! i'll check the review section for comments on D2 yet again.
