I see them as they are represented by the black and white swirls in the forever cosmic dance.

what does the white dot in the black and the black dot in the white represent?
Is there both a legend and a factual representation?

In the I-Ching I think they are called lesser Yin and lesser Yang. My interpreatation would be that they represent the connectedness and inderdependence of yin and yang. A trace of light in darkness and a trace of darkness in light. They are not opposed yet not the same, oneness and duality together.

Turns out that eastern religion elective had some use after all

I haven't heard the I- Ching mentioned in conversation for a long time. Grob just eloquently wrote anything I could have added. I bet there's a little more out there on the subject. Hopefully, a forumite who is a specialist on the dots in the Ying Yang symbol will arrive, lol.

The following is an excerpt from:

http://www.thaiexotictreasures.com/yin_yang.html

"The yin yang symbol contains two smaller circles: a small circle of yin inside the yang, and a small circle inside the yin. Often misunderstood, these important circles reinforce the circular nature of the philosophy by symbolizing another Taoist tenet: one extreme will always change into its opposite, so that extreme yang turns into yin and vice versa."

Seems consistent with Grob's post.

Another reflection:

"Within Yang, there is a small piece of Yin. Within Yin, there is a small piece of Yang. Just as in the heart of winter, a seed lays in wait to become life, so is Yang waited within Yin for its turn. In a hot summer, a sudden desert storm can bring coolness. This too is an example of how Yin is found in Yang. Again, there are no absolutes, just cycles in time."

Thanks for the facts.

I am still hoping for a good Yin Yang Yarn.

It seems to me the white Dog raises it's sleepy head when the black dog howls.

Everything is a good yin yang story. I cant think of a good story that change is not at the heart of.

Great seed analogy Eric. I wish I could come up with stuff like that.

from the believe it or not dept; I've been listening to old records lately, and I've the first Jefferson Starship album. The first cut they sing about 'in the middle of yang is a little bit of ying" (or visa versa) and I didn't put it together until I read this thread today.

I like this very much.

I wish I could take credit for the noted observations. I like the seed-in-winter analogy, too.

I got to admire a world where two completely opposite truths are true at the same time. I think of it as a ball more than a cycle, but the bottom line is that linear solutions will not work. I'm trying to describe a world where the prosecutor's and the defense attorneys views are both legitimate.

Niels Bohr, the renowned physicist, chose to include the yin-yang symbol in his family coat-of-arms upon being awarded the Order of the Elephant from the Danish government in 1947. The inscription, "CONTRARI SUNT COMPLEMENTA" means Opposites Are Complements.

Almost all ancient mystery schools teach that only on earth are their pairs of opposites.

The Yin and Yang represent the motion on earth but since the illusion of pairs of opposites are illusions each side has some of the color of the other alluding to the cosmic harmony beyond:

From the Gnostic Gospel of Thomas:

22 Jesus saw some babies nursing. He said to his disciples, "These nursing babies are like those who enter the kingdom."

They said to him, "Then shall we enter the kingdom as babies?"

Jesus said to them, "When you make the two into one, and when you make the inner like the outer and the outer like the inner, and the upper like the lower, and when you make male and female into a single one, so that the male will not be male nor the female be female, when you make eyes in place of an eye, a hand in place of a hand, a foot in place of a foot, an image in place of an image, then you will enter [the kingdom]."

From the Bible:

"You are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures, or the power of God. "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. (Matthew 22:29-30)

From the Bhagavad Gita chapter 7 Krishna Says:

By passion for the "pairs of opposites,"
By those twain snares of Like and Dislike, Prince!
All creatures live bewildered, save some few
Who, quit of sins, holy in act, informed,
Freed from the "opposites,"and fixed in faith,
Cleave unto Me.

The Tao Te Ching says Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2

Since the world points up beauty
as such,
There is ugliness too.

If goodness is taken as goodness,
Wickedness enters as well.

For is and is-not come together.
Hard and easy are complementary.
Long and short are relative.
High and low are comparative.

Pitch and sound make harmony.
Before and after
are a sequence.

Intresting coming from Vishnu in the Mahabarta I would have associated the symbol of yin and yang most closly with Shiva what with his chess board of black and white in hinduism and the indus valley civilization.

The material reality is duality of opposition. In true existence the opposition of what is is what it is not.

Up and down the waves do slide.

One pushing other, both along for the ride.

white facing moon,black the abyss.

everchanging color,some thing amiss.

Never any closer than reflection permits.

Light mirrors dark in their neverending trist.
