YO accidently ordered too thick of 25100

If it helps....Just checked New Jersey Steel Baron's website and he has 52100 in stock. You can get a 48 inch X 0.0937 X 2 inch piece for about $20. The 0.125 thickness was $25.

I have a grizzly 2x72. I going to run up to the depot and try get a bandsaw blade and cut it in half with that. That would be awesome if it does work. its 48" long so will cut it down to each knife length. Should be interesting.

Please do not take offense,,, the last thing I want to do is discourage anyone from trying their hand at making knives.

Re-sawing four feet of 1/4" stock into 1/8" stock is just plain dumb. Anyone who's ever spent any time in a metal shop could see why that's a terrible idea, doomed to failure. It just doesn't add up. See Nick Wheeler's post above.

When you want 1/8" stock... buy 1/8" stock. This is not rocket surgery ;)

LOL, I am just going to make some insane machete type knife... I'll have to figure out what its called should be pretty awesome.

Good luck with that! 1/4" 52100 will certainly make one helluva chopper or cleaver if it's ground right. That has nothing to do with machetes (insane or otherwise), but... here we are.

rcetroy put it in my cart already gonna pay tomorrow to lazy to do it tonight.

My confidence in this project increases directly in proportion to your every post.

I did the same thing when I was first starting out. Decided I wanted to try W2. Bought a stick .250" from Aldo some years back but quickly learned it was too thick for most knives I wanted to make! I started to cut it in half with a hacksaw and quickly decided "rain on that idea". I still have that same stick and one day will make a beast of some sort out of it. Maybe a wakizashi.

What if a person did cut thru a 1/4" bar of steel to where they had two 1/8" pieces. Would there be a tendency to curve toward the cut side? Just curious is all.

What is your purpose of this? Since you want an explanation I didn't want to get my wallet from up stairs and go down stairs to type the information in. Your confidence is no concern of mine. I am not really going to run a band saw down 48" of 52100. Not to mention I said cut it down to knife size then run the band saw down it. But I understand your just a troll on here and an ultimate troll an admin of a forum. I am not impressed with your knives at all. Well I would never buy one. but good luck to those who do.

But for your information I actually cut them up and turned them into a snow plow yes that is right I cut two peices of 52100 and turned into a working snow plow with engine from just those two peices. Beat that.

Ah yes James Terrio, the well known shop talk troll:rolleyes::D

I sincerely apologize if my comments here have been disruptive. Carry on, and enjoy the journey! :)

If giving sound advice constitutes trolling, then I welcome James' trolling any day. You ended up doing what he suggested in the end anyways....you sure told him.

Ouch!

That is a scathing reply to someone that was only trying to help...If anything, I am the one that first brought up your thought of trying to run a band saw through the stock, but even that wasn't meant to dissuade, but educate.

Good luck in your endeavors..It's hard enough for people to ask for help...It's even harder to help them when the favor was returned with so much animosity.

What we've got here is, failure to communicate. Some men, you just cain't reach.

I really would like to see the snowplow made of 52100, though. That sounds awesome!

I would just mill it down but I'm guessing thats not an option for you... do you have a local machine shop that would cut it down for you?

As James said, Sanding that down would be a LOT of extra work especially if you don't have a good grinder set-up. Just put it aside and get another piece or try a different project.

Like Josh said. I bet if you went to a local machine/die shop and spoke with the foreman he could have someone mill it down for you quite reasonably. Should only take a day or so turn around. Some shops may not even charge you. We've done things like this many times at my shop. We've removed broken screws, tapped larger holes, and surface ground things for walk ins many times w/o charge if it's something that's quick. Had one guy we told "no charge" send 3 pizzas at lunch time the next day.

So, you get what we had here last week
Which is the way he wants it, well, he gets it
An' I don't like it any more than you men
