Yo Dan (koster) Did you ever find a MArtial art you liked?

Thanks, Danny - and great memory...!

Haven't found it yet....haven't really looked much either....:D :p

For anybody else interested....I'm looking mostly for something that will utilize lower body strength. Passive-strength training is ok too. Explosive would be nice. ;)

But none of this flippy-whappy stuff......

Little Rock is about 3 hours away.

I'm in the NorthWest corner. Maybe there's something at the U of Arkansas? I'll look into it...but college tends to be dumbed down a bit...:(

Frankly I'd be happy with just a book and do the training at home...

can you help with explaing what you mean by "explosive" and "flippy"?
Bujinkan definitely utilizes lower body strength.

exposive - high concentrations of energy in specific areas

flippy - thought that offered a good visual....:D.....think of it this way....compare fencing to greco-roman wrestling (grappling)

passive strength - using the energy/strength of your combatant against them.

These are things that "make sense" to me mentally and physically. If I can't find a MA to fit it, then I won't bother with it. Just wanted to know which would more closely fit my ideal.

Keep the questions coming....I have an idea in my head and probably need help/guidance in explaining it.

Oh... I was going to add that I've been doing passive strength training for years. I guess we have a different definition. :)

Are you taking it for excercise or for da street?

I'll look into that, Danny. Thanks.

I'm getting into this partly for strength training, partly for muscle control, and partly for the energy output (think stress reduction).

Should also add....I'm not big on aggressive sports....make sense? At the same time, I do not get the workout I like to get from yoga or tai-chi....sure, that's a control-oriented activity, but it's just not for me...

And yes, Danny, eventually I'd want to find a partner at the minimum. Maybe you could show me some stuff in December? :D

10 bux on the guy from Japan. :)

If you're not gonna be breaking people and hurting things, my 2 cents is to go around to the local schools and watch some of the classes. If it seems fun you might wanna sign up.

Bujinkan will do all of that, but for exercise I think a low-impact aerobics tape would be better.

Bujinkan stuff is fairly non-physical. (not a sweaty thing)

If I can make the december trip happen, I will show you a lot of basics and you can make better use of the tapes too.

Training will help you avoid stress in the first place but it will also help you let go of it.

(that ebay deal isnt bad, its only like 5$ right now for two tapes.)
I know the guy that made those tapes and hes been doing this a long time.

What are the nearest cities to your home?

not lookin' for a cardio workout....I got 3 boys to help me with that....:D

By "exercise" I mean "strength training"....muscle control....motor skills, etc.

There are hundreds if not thousands of styles, you can start to narrow it down a bit but considering systems, then some more by considering which culture i.e. Japanese Chinese Filipino etc, then internal or external…weapons based non-weapons base. Then consider more of what you really want to do and what you will use it for. Also consider the type of art and the requirements to develop and learn the skills how much are you willing to give?

Have trained in a number of systems including Tai-jitsu, which I love.
Check out this gentleman Master Guy Savelli. Has a great approach to training. He basically shows you how to train all day every day. Kuntao is a very direct and devastating system. He has a correspondence course and is a very, very nice man and willing to talk to you anytime. In fact, he gives you his cell phone number. I would also suggest that anytime a seminar comes near you in any system, attend if you can. All knowledge is good and this will also help you to find a system that fits you. Most martial arts schools sponsor these. Good luck and keep an open mind.

Oops, forgot tho give you the link. www.worldkungfu.com

Khukuris still apply. Remember the guy in south africa with the burgaler?

I have actually been slowly looking for a MA that would be very similar to your conditions Dan. Passive resistant, explosive, non-flippy, the flippy thing rules out most corner dojos. Actually that sounds like Chen Tai-ji (the real stuff, not that lunch break stress reliever).

I never could find anything in my area.

After a brief search for Bujinkan I found one school in nw portland (hour and 15 min+ away with good traffic). On the bright side I did find a website that wasn't made for IE (http://www.bujinkan.org/main/page1.asp).

Another search found one that was listed at jumpkicks.com. American Bujinkan Dojo. Danny, do you have any way of finding anything out about it before I decide to go down there?
