York: A New Arthur Wright Knife & An Older Clasp Knife

Thanks Jack. Yeah the springs those clasp knives are something else, the carbon blade takes a great edge though.

I'm glad i'm not imagining the strong blade pull on the Wright knives. Now and then i'll use the knife and think it's not so bad, but if i try and use it at work where i'll often use a knife once or twice per hour, it becomes quite difficult when my hands are oily/greasy/wet. Shame as a carbon bladed sheepsfoot is my favourite pattern.

Yes, I can imagine. I'm over in Sheffield tomorrow and if I get a chance I may call in at a shop that sells a few Sheffield knives. If I do, I'll try a few out to see if the pulls vary. I'd say my Wright knife certainly has a stronger pull than average, even compared to other Sheffield knives I have. I'll be interested to see what the pull is like on some of the other Wright models.

That would be interesting.

I have 3 Sheffield knives, the 2 previously mentioned and one of your favourites, a Richards (9th b/day present from grandparents and to be fair they did tell me that it wasn't a very good make) scout/camp knife. The Richards has very easy pull, though to be honest the back spring doesn't (spring) wery well anymore.

Yes, perhaps one of the reasons they were popular! :) The Richards scout knives I've handled have stiffer pulls than most of their other knives I think too. I don't have any of my grandfather's old J.Rodgers knives anymore (nor any of my own), but as I recall the pull was somewhere between the Richards and the Wright - except for their clasp knife of course! :) Be interesting to hear what others think about this issue and how they find the pull on their Sheffield-made knives compared to others.

Wait a minute, you said labyrinthine independent hardware store? Is that what they're calling ironmongers over there now?

... My proffered “Excuse me” brought a frightened squeal from the large lady. “I’m with him!” she shrieked, pointing a porcine finger at her fellow ‘Prepper’. She clearly wasn’t too prepared for encounters with politely spoken middle-aged gentlemen, or perhaps it was just something she wasn’t used to....

she didnt expect a sort of spanish inquisition?

That sounds like a plan! (I'd been thinking about suggesting a meet anyway...maybe in Otley.
Does that gothy barmaid still work there? ;))
^^^^
He he!

You get about Jack.

I'd be well up that  As you know, I don't mind travelling! :)

Another good read :) Those Lambsfoots were pretty ubiquitous in my youth, and perhaps because of that I can't get very excited by them.
I do like a nice Sheepsfoot blade, like on the British Army knives. I've quite a few of those.

Thanks a lot Carl, that means a lot to me. Yes, they were pretty ubiquitous when I was a boy, and I always wanted something pointier and more exciting then! My main reason for wanting one now is nostalgia if I'm honest, but I have grown to like the less pointy patterns more as I've got older :)

Best wishes

Jack

you might want to check the spelling of that name -there are a couple of 'em lurking around here.
Oh and don't forget Robin Hood-yes i know he came from Notts but it is known historical fact that he had a beer in every pub and wee'd on every tree between Scunthorpe and Bingham .
Bless you my children, Cardinal Fang.

Great story, sounds like some interesting folks running shops in York.

Nice looking Wright, too.

Jack,

Thank you very much for delightful descriptions of your fascinating travels.

Thanks again fellers. I'm going to try to get to the South Yorkshire town of Rotherham soon, it reputedly has a good fleamarket, but is a grim place!

My apologies for the confusion. This is a very funny post, the ongoing (and often quite intense) rivalry about Robin Hood always makes me laugh :D

I was on a train on the famous Settle-Carlisle line a few years ago, and a guide on the train instructed his group of tourists: "And if you look out of the window now, you can just see the remains of the house in which King Arthur was born!" :D

An unenviable task if ever there was Jack. We the members of BF appreciate your sacrifice! ;D

Thanks for the idea of the flea market though. I'm not telling you where I'm thinking of going just in case you beat me to it :p

Thanks mate, I once had to live in Rotherham for a couple months, so I know what a truly miserable place it is!

Maybe Rotherham is a bluff! ;) :D

Barnsley is about the best I've found so far. Leeds sort of has one, but it's a total waste of time. They're just building a new Sheffield market, so maybe there'll be one there in time. Knaresborough's weekly market is just a general market, as is Otley's twice weekly one for that matter. I'm sure there are others though :)
