You buy a knife to be a user but can't bring yourself to use it!

Can anyone relate to this? I'm not a collector. A few years back I got a bonus at work and the opportunity presented itself to buy a Grimsmo Norseman from the factory. The thing is AWESOME! Best action I've ever experienced by some measure. Great ergos. It's a knife I've wanted for a long time.

The intention was always to carry it daily. Every time I take it out to play with, I can't stop smiling like a goofball. But I can't get over the hurdle of actually putting it in my pocket and leaving the house. It's not the first expensive blade I've purchased either (although it is the most expensive blade I've purchased).

I'd love to hear from folks who know the issue I discuss here. I fully realize it's a first-world problem, but still..

I bought a microtech utx-85 Tonto to carry daily. I never carry it for a slightly different reason though. It is so dull new out of the box it doesn't really cut melted butter and the angles are 25-30 dps and not equal that it'll take forever to put a decent edge on it let alone getting it to look right will be almost impossible. So yeah.... same but different

I feel your pain, I have 2 safe queens that I’ll carry around the house but rarely carry out of the house cause they’re just too hard to replace.

I was convinced recently to carry my crk more often and be willing to use it recently in a thread about what was a good knife for construction. But I must admit that my daily activities rarely call for any hard use of my knives so….

If you wanted to carry it more I would recommend keeping a small backup in case ya need a knife for something you’re not willing to use it on.

I do generally agree with the bond created by using all of your knives though.

All my CRKs have been relegated to special occasion or weekend carry. Mainly as they were gifts from the wifey and with the special birthdates of them, they will be almost impossible to replace. But they are used and carried, just not that often.

Don't have that issue, I'll use everything I buy. I'd even use a rockstead if I ever ran Into both money and desire to own one, I'd use it all up and make it feel vulnerable and dirty 🫣

I felt this way for a while when I bought my Spyderco K2, it was the most expensive knife I owned at the time. I carried it for about a month and honestly tried not to use it. One day I was working on a hopper bottom trailer and a couple wires arced and began to melt and burn. So I grabbed my K2 and cut the two wires and never looked back again.
I do have other knives that are a little more expensive that I carry and use but I carry them in casual or dress situations, not work.

Oh yeah! I can relate to buying a knife and can’t seem to bring myself to use it. I just recently bought a limited run Buck 501 Larrin. It is too nice for me to actually use it!

I just tell myself that I'll carry it in the future.

...speak of the devil

I figure if you are a collector or have plans on maybe selling it one day, then so be it.

If not, just use it. When I look at all the knives I have and all the marks and wear that I've put on them, they sort of tell a story and I value them more as time passes.

I feel that way about a couple of patterned SHFs, so I bought a plain one to EDC!

I tend to sell or trade off what I don’t use. That said, I have found myself in this situation before. I always carry at least two knives. I would find myself carrying the new hotness but not using it.

I forced myself to carry only that knife I was apprehensive to use. I have to cut stuff daily, so with no backup to whip out I had no choice.

Look at it this way - you’ll fret over the first scratch, but you’ll revel in every one that follows it. Nothing like a well used, well loved knife with lots of character.
