I was just curious if I was the only grown man on here that gets a little happy feeling when someone asks me if I have a knife? haha. Happened yesterday. I was talking with a buddy and a friend of his said "hey man, you don't happen to have a knife do you?" I get as stoked as a 10 year old boy..."Why yes sir...yes sir I do. I have a knife right here!" Is it just me??? :)

I should also mention that I have to resist the urge to dork out and explain to them what kind of edge finish is on the super steel they are using to cut the piece of thread off of their shorts. "That's a 30 degree inclusive edge with a 40 degree microbevel. I finished it on a 600 grit DMT to leave it nice and toothy. So yeah...let me know how it handles that thread.":p

Of course I get that happy feeling. :)
And if it's a girl that needs knife help, it's full "knight in shining armour" time! :D

I got asked that today actually in the parking lot at the grocery store.

Gave the guy my sebenza and he chopped up some pepperoni and cheese for the kids in the car.

I am, as I type this, standing behind the bar where I'm working a wedding. In a panic moment, during the ceremony, we realized that we hadn't sliced any oranges for the negroni cocktails (and what's a negroni without an orange slice). Frantic, my boss said "does anyone have a knife on them!?"

And guess who saved the day...

(Hint. It was me :) )

I don't let anyone touch my knives. I'm like a greaser guy who gets all touchy about his precious muscle car.

At my friends wedding they forgot bottle openers . We used my Benchmade 912 to open a bunch of bottles until a suitable replacement could be found

It depends what the knife is being used for is whether or not I have a knife lol. And whether or not its a stranger or a group you're with.

I personally wouldn't let someone do a simple mundane task with a $400 dollar sebenza. For all you know they can drop it tip down on concentrate and a random person isn't going to realize it value. It's simply a knife to them or cutting tool. I don't even have a sebenza but if I did I would baby it.

It's just on the premise that's its a random person you don't know. Its like someone asking me to use my phone. Doesn't matter if my phone was $100 or a $600 iphone I would tend to say no unless I feel that person is in desire need. That's from personal experience as most random people I ever ask to use something will say no. I've had hard time getting people just to lend me a car jack or a random person to do a favor and jump my car.

I don't let others use the knife.
I find out what needs doing, then do it myself. :)

If they were capable of using a knife themself, they'd already have one with them. ;)

I sharpened a very old, dull axe for my buddy...ruining two sanding belts in the process. Two days later, his neighbor borrowed the axe and used it to chop up some bricks as "decoration" around a front-lawn tree. Taught me something...
I would still be happy to help out...but wouldn't hand over my knife...

I've seen you post this several times :D still makes me cringe.

I usually go up to people who could use a knife and lend them one after I see what they're doing or they just ask me to do it. But it does make you feel good inside after the fact.

Maybe because you help someone out or just because you get to use your knife

OP you brought back a very nice memory of mine. In a Gun Store of all places the owner, who knows me well asks "do you have a sharp knife?" :D I hand him my VERY sharp (whatever I was carrying at the time , they are always quite sharp) knife. He easily slices open the box it was needed for; hands it back and says (in front of half a dozen people ) "I should have known better than to ask YOU if it was sharp -"fill me with pride". This was 10-12 years ago, and it still brings a smile. Thank you :)

Just today at a kids birthday party, my buddy turns and says,

"I know it's a dumb question but, do you got a knife?"

I laughed with, "big one or small one?"

In an urban setting, no....it doesn't make me "happy." It puts me on guard.

My response is, "What do you need one for?" Then we go from there. And whatever it is, if it's OK, I do it for them---unless it's a very close friend who KNOWS.

My biggest fear isn't so much what they'll put the edge to, it's that they'll dr-dr-dr-drop it.

In the woods with friends it's usually, "Sure....here."

I had some guy at a store ask me what my beltknife was. I happily whipped it and and showed it off. A Buck Ergohunter Pro in S30V. He was impressed. So, I showed him my JK Friction folder with titanium slabs, O1 steel. He was even more impressed. After talking to him about the steel for a minute, it became clear he would be impressed with anything sharp or shiny.

I go from hero to zero in about 3 seconds, because then they ask if they can use it, and I say no. I'll cut it for them, but I usually put them through the grinder as to WHY they don't have a knife on them.

When I'm at a family reunion, and helping to get things set up, one of my aunts will invariably come up to me and say "Give me your knife". They all assume that all men have one on them at all times. I don't mind giving it to them, as they know how to treat one as well. Love the old timers! :D

Yes, and I agree it's always a nice feeling to be prepared whether it's knife, light, fire, etc. and there is a need to utilize our resources that we carry.

I tend to agree with others in the hesitancy to actually lend out my tools for others usage though. Years and years ago when I smoked cigarettes and a lot of other people did too for that matter someone would always need a lighter. Well I learned to always hold the lighter and light their cigarette instead of handing it over to them. My lighter could never "walk away and not make its way back to me" if I held it myself. As an aside, I suppose it was a visual reminder to me/them to be prepared. Otherwise, you'd rely on another man to have to light your desperate unlit cigarette.. ha. I guess I tend to apply that same mentality to any of my tools.
