"You don't happen to have a knife do you?"

How I feel when someone asks if I have a knife on me...

But seriously, I keep a few decent cheaper folders close to hand and usually offer to sell them one. Made a few converts by doing this.

I'm always happy to come through with a knife when someone needs one, but it's always under my supervision. These days I'll even ask, "What are you going to do with it?" This question is especially important to me after a friend handed his brand new Griptilian over to someone without asking that question and the guy proceeded to start cutting the lid off a can of ground coffee with it. The blade held up surprisingly well but it got jacked up. I bought him a new blade as a Christmas present last year.

Brings a smile to my face when someone ask. Last time was Aug. 12th at a picnic in the park.

Yeah, I usually just cut it for them, unless they are known to be trustworthy with sharp blades.

I recent purchased a Buck CSAR-T with my Dad in mind. I work with him on our small family farm, and he's always asking for mine, and I cringe every time. Not with this knife.

He can go ahead and dig, chop, pry and poke. I just don't care. I finally have a knife that can take it, and if it can't, well......it all just "stuff" anyway.

Some people here just lend out a "cheap knife" when someone asks. I don't abuse even cheap knives unless it is a have to situation. That means I can't wander out to my truck and get another tool (or knife) suitable for the task. But is it my responsibility to stop what I am doing, go out to my truck and retrieve another knife/tool just to make someone who is too lazy to carry a knife happy? Plus, I bought that knife. Cheap or not, it was my money and not their's.

One of my workers frequently asks to borrow my knife because he knows I always have one. Sounds great right? I ask since he borrows my knives why he doesn't have his own? Oh.... I'm not going to carry a knife..... makes no sense to me at all when they are Mr. Handy Man. Where is their box cutter/utility knife on their belt or in their pocket? No where.... they expect me to provide that.... It irks me to no end. You see, I concern myself with time and efficiency. Most of the people I know have no regard for either since I am paying them. It takes what it takes.....

I'm the only one who uses my knives, end of story.

When someone asks "You don't happen to have a knife, do you?" I typically respond with "What do you need a knife for?"

I don't let others use the knife.
I find out what needs doing, then do it myself. :)

If they were capable of using a knife themself, they'd already have one with them. ;)

Nailed it. Never loan your knife (or your pickup truck) to anyone. I tell folks I'll happily drive my truck for them to move whatever they need moved, but loaned trucks and knives are magnets for destruction. I learned the hard way!

Nope. In my experience, typically what they mean is:
"Do you have a pry bar or screw driver?"

I don't carry a spare cheap knife on me. So I don't lend out my EDC. If someone needs something cut that bad, they should have carried their own knife. If they're REALLY desperate, I'll cut whatever needs cutting for them. But I'm not handing my knife over so that someone can beat the snot out of it. Been there, done that, never again.

A buddy dropped my favorite Akribis on the pavement a while back when I handed it to him. I agree with consensus here, never again.

I have a little SAK money clip knife that I might hand over if I knew the person pretty well.

I feel like some people overreact a bit from what I'm reading (or at least that's how it's coming off through text), but I can certainly understand. I have never been asked if I had a knife, but I was asked if I had a pen a little while back. It just so happened that I had my brand new bolt action pen on me. I handed it over to my buddy, and he immediately dropped it on the polished concrete floor at our job. The "bolt action" no longer functioned, and now the pen is a paperweight. Learning from that experience, I'll probably never lend out my knives.

Do I have a knife on me? No. I generally have at least three traditional knives, plus two multi-tools on me.
