I know I should probably post this in the knifemakers forum or something, but this is where I spend most of my time and this is where I had my "please give me some steel" thread so this is where I'm posting it. This past weekend, I ground out my first knife from a 10" Bastard Cut flat file. I ground out the basic profile on a bench grinder, being very careful not to let the steel heat up, and finished it out on the belt sander. It has a bayonet style blade with a flat grind. I left a little bit of the file teeth on top to serve as thumb traction. I can't decide what I want to do for a handle on it so for right now it's just cord wrapped. I was pretty pleased with it for my first attemp at grinding out a blade.

Next we have the piece of O-1 that Scott Gossman was nice enough to send me. Back when I had my thread asking for steel, Scott was nice enough to send me this piece of stock and said he would do the heat treat for me after I shaped it. Last night, I got home from work and just had that "I bet I could grind out a good one right now" feeling. Again, I ground out the basic profile on a bench grinder and then finished it up on the belt sander. It has a drop style with a convex grind. I think it will make a good bushcraft knife. I don't mean to brag, but I think it turned out awesome. I was really amazed that it came out that nice. I'm bitten. I'm a knife maker. Fletcher knives is coming.

Edit: I took the first two pictures of the slideshow out for the Woodcraft knife. I think they were kind of misleading. That knife is about 9.5" overall.

That looks great man, you definitely have skills. I have tried a few times to grind out a knife, andneedless to say, it um... never seems to work out quite right.

Very cool Dylside!

Can't wait to see that O-1 chopper with some handle scales. What are you going to go with?

Looking forward to Fletcher Knives,

All the best,

- Mike

Very nice. Way to go. I think some osage wood for the handles would real cool. LOL

Man those are some ugly knives! I would ditch those things right away in a survival situation, no use for those things!

Just kidding man, great job on your first tries (at least that you showed us). Looks like they turned out fine.

Dylan, you suck.

I will have to buy knives from you too now!!

Good stuff. That bottom one speaks to me.

Great job!!!!!!!

I edited my top post. The first two pictures of the Gossman steel look like a chopper, but it was just the angle at which i took the picture. It's actually a little midsize woodcraft knife, overall about 9.5" long. Looked like a big ass Khuk in those first two pics or something. lol.

hahaha. I swear to God, those are my first two. The furthest I've ever gone before this was changing a Ka-Bar to a Scandi grind. Like I said, even I was like "holy s@#$. These turned out pretty good." lol.

Right on I have made 4 knifes now, none of them are any good, but little by little i am getting better. great design what are you going to use for handles? cord wrap would cheat that beautiful knife. (IMO)

Great job on both 1st timers ! wood scales sound easier to do than say micarta or something along those lines... again Great job

I'd really like to do either a red or green dyed birdseye maple. If I do green, I'll probably do white spacers. If red, then black spacers. I also love this red dyed black ash burl.
