you guys like TOPS knives?

It's strange how everyone criticizes TOPS for being overpriced, but RAT Cutlery's prices are about the same and the blades of each company use the same steel and handle materials, yet RAT Cutlery doesn't get labeled as overpriced like TOPS does.

I like a few of theirs, dont own any though. From what I have read on the forum they are good not amazing but good.

I desire their Moccasin Ranger..way cool!

Funny thing about this website..y'all bitch about offshore built knives. Then a "Made in USA" knife costs too much! WTF?

I liked the Moccasin Ranger until I held it.

The grind doesnt even start until about 2/3 of the way down the blade. Way too thick of a saber grind to cut much of anything really.

personally don't have issues with carbon blades.
however price matters more than ever.
but the good majority of Tops "unique" offerings just seem to have that perculiar design sense and styling that takes some getting used to i suppose...

There's nothing wrong with TOPS knives functionally; the materials and heat-treat are first-rate, and they definitely cut. Particularly, those with spine saws are among the few spine saws that work properly. I owned a small Tom Brown Tracker for awhile and it was definately a cool toy.

Practically speaking, however, almost every TOPS knife is an overpriced peacock, and most of the handles appear to have been designed for gorrilas. Another thing to beware of is that the geometry on many TOPS knives goes way too far prioritizing toughness over cutting ability, making the cutting edge thick and inefficient.

I'm also not a fan of their extreme and aggressive marketing, 'hard-to-the-core,' 'one-knife-one-life,' and similar drivel. Reminds me of the Dark Ops ads. People accuse Cold Steel's marketing techniques of the same thing, but at least they provide some good knife porn to go with it.

For those reasons, I'm not sure I'd buy a TOPS knife again, but if you can get around those quibbles of mine - which I stress are strictly personal - then there's nothing really wrong with them.

i think people thought i dont like 1095 it is one of my favorites but lets compare the price of an ontario sp 10 to any tops knife pricewise, they are way off. And you are not reading this from someone who is afraid to spend,

I think they look really stupid. Lots of gimmicks. Knives with gimmicks ==:barf: to me. Ill never buy em.

Every knife company uses gimmicks, some more than others.I used to say the same thing about the Karambit, Civilian,TDI, and pretty any inverted edge knife, but when you hold it, or use it, you'll find out pretty quickly how effective they are.

Like I've said, they are purpose built tools just like Szabo, AK, and others. You're not gonna get many Fighting knives that can be good at bushcraft, but I wouldn't want to grapple with a guy holding a Devil's Elbow either.

Some of their designs come from guys like Perrin, Szabo, etc.
Guys that make mostly fighting knives. Buy 'em, hold 'em, work with'em, and if you still don't like it, I'll be happy to take them off your hands! LOL

I have the Mohawk hunter, its a great knife and I like the size and blade shape. You can diffidently tell its quality. It came sharp out of the box, though I did decide to redo the grind for my own interests. Yea some of their products are gimicky but some are pretty nice and worth the money.

That why I sent mine to Krein. That and the coating just caused too much drag in the cut.

TOPS builds a good knife, even though I strongly disagree with their usual approach to knife design. I own and EDC the Shango (designed by our very own Joezilla) and it's a fantastic knife, and thinner than their usual "sharpened crowbar" lineup. Most of their other pieces don't interest me, though.

The fact that they consider hotlinking their images to be theft kind of bugs the hell out of me, though. :o
