I am still a big fan of buying what you really like. If the rest of the world wants it, all the better.

Remember when the world was crazy and you saw CQC6's going for $1500-$2000? KnifeArt has one posted now for $1250  Are they on the way down? Regardless of how hot the maker may be at a given time, I personally would try not to spend more than the realistic value of the knife. Overpaying for a knife based on current market trends will more often than not bite you in the long run.

I think that right now, paying full retail from a well established maker will never pay off. Nonewithstanding the Loveless, Moran, Heron examples of people who made bundles, I think that it's nearly impossible not to loose money in a high end knife collection - knives are just not getting the right level of exposure from the general public for that. The counter-example on that are some makers who sell below going rates, and have multiyear wait period. I guess that a Loveless from Loveless can be resold immediately at some premium, right?

A double-dose of Stout. As in Johnny Stout -

One fully tricked-out dress custom at around $1,500.00; and a $500.00 tactical EDC.

:)

O.K. the only question for me would be whether it would be three or four Carsons.Probably three, one tricked out and two of the regulars.:D That would still leave me with enough cash to take the wife out for supper and smooth it all over.

I'd buy an Osborne and a Steigerwalt, or maybe a single Kaj Embretson knife, but it would have to be the right knife. Another combination that comes to mind would be Minnick/Steigerwalt. Anyway, I'd probably split somewhere between a $1,300/700 knife combo or a $1,500/500 knife combo. J.W. Smith/Steigerwalt would also be a contender. Those are two price points where you can find alot of value, particularly if you deal with the maker directly. Osborne/Sawby also comes to mind but you'd probably be in the $2,200 range then. The $2,000 knife is tough, since you're not really at the high end where you can get a really nicely engraved knife or such. If I had $3,500 to blow then I'd go with a single knife.
