after polishing a piece of 1/8 nickel silver pin stock you decide that the best way to carry this very hot piece of metal across the shop to your work bench is between your lips.
Wow does that hurt.

Never done that one before, and of course did it again 10 minutes later.

Time to call it a night.

is the (future) scar placement at least symetrical so you can claim that that's where your fangs cut your lips when they grow out at midnight on a full moon? :D

The question nobody has so far asked is: do you regularly put shop objects in your mouth? Nickel is toxic enough that one jewelry trade publication said something about some countries banning it's use in white gold in the next couple years.

I don't have a shop (yet!), but I definitely use my lips (not mouth, lips... there's a (slight) difference!) as a third hand WAY too often. Haven't died yet, so I must be stronger!

Dip bucket near buffers and grinders......Alot better than burns. And if the dipping water is a little merky, it might help you break the habit putting hot metal on your lips...lots of nerve ending very near the surface. The thought makes me cring and you were the one hurt....
Take Care!

you know your not thinking when....
1. you dont clamp blades that are getting drilled for pins....
2. your spark arrestor/ dust collection unit is made of cardboard.
3. you dont unplug all your tools when you loose power.... resulting in up set neighbors at 300 am when it kicks back on......

Ah, the age old method using the lost art of saliva quenching.... :D

ah yes, iv had many burns (including a heart shaped brand my finance put on my leg woo! (inquire for pics if interested. i forged the brand)) but lip burns are a special kind of pain. i get those from time to time when scale jumps up and welds to lips and tongue. no bueno. my friends made plenty of crack pipe jokes... tisk tisk. docdredd, iv been without power for about a week from the wind storm we had, i had to go out late at night and make sure all my tools were running, i hope the neighbors didnt mind :)

I cut some brass on the bandsaw last week and it was so hot that when I picked it up it stuck to my hand. Now I learn that I could have saved my hand the pain by picking up hot metal with my face.
