You may want to reconsider using Shopify

Maybe this is not an appropriate forum, but I want to take this opportunity to alert you not to use Shopify. A lot of merchants who accept online payments use it and if you come across it - do not enter any information and request a different form of payment. Or if you are a merchant using them switch to another platform if you value your customers. Shopify was just hacked - again. Somebody used Shopify info (where I do not even have an account!) I entered (and should have been destroyed after transaction was complete) and made a couple fraudulent charges. I contacted my CC and those charges did not go through, we caught them in the pending stage. I have since tried to contact Shopfy to alert them to the data breach - there is no way to contact them unless you have an account. They have no phone number - they call you back. Steer clear, save yourself from headaches, and tell others. Shopify should be driven out of business - how convenient they cannot be reached! And you think PP is bad, hah!

Naive question, how can you tell someone used Shopify info versus just your CC info some other way? Maybe I'm not sure how "Shopify info" differs from CC+name+address type info

It was traced to a purchase through Shopify by the merchant who contacted me. He had a rash of fraudulent activity around the same time through Shopify - the only thing that tied everything together. But then I cannot really call Shopify and chat with them about it. How convenient.

Other possibilities, your personal computer or device is breached and/or the merchant is breached. Are you 100% certain your computer is clean and is the merchant 100% their systems are clean? How are you certain?

I'm unaware how much access individual vendors using Shopify have to their customers information... but it has to be stored somewhere.

I have been using this app for quite some time, and have been using it to conduct over 200 transactions a week.

It's not immune to attacks, but has been incredibly useful and wonderful for business.

Buyer beware. Fact there is no way to reach Shopify for general public to discuss security concerns is telling. You want to deal with them, great for you. I will not. It is fantastic that there is a statement on this very forum that suggests not to use PPFF. I have never had an issue with PPFF and scams are purely social. Shopify, for a buyer, is completely transparent, no vetting other than trusting that vendor is legit, and usually, vendors only accept Shopify - you have options with PP. Great use of AI bot to make your point, because it is infallible and is always correct. And never biased, nosireebob. Do you work as a factchecker? Geez.... I am sorry for being curt, getting scammed and having to deal with a new CC is never fun. From what I have learned, Shopify was at the epicenter of this and there is no way to reach them to even alert them of the hack. Buyer beware. I will change the title of the post (if I can) to be a recommendation, not a statement.

It is a search engine. A really fast one. And it provided sources that back up its summary.

I think you mean "lacking transparency". And it's a fair point. That is why people should use online transaction best practices such as payment methods that offer buyer protection. Which you did. And look how that turned out for you? A little lost time and frustration, but got your money back.

Recommending avoidance of Shopify altogether based on your experience is still disproportionate, as it would be to recommend avoidance of Bladeforums for making knife deals. There are variables at play in both platforms that have allowed fraud to take place at times, but the platforms themselves are not the problem. That's, again, why people should use best practices.

It's perfectly reasonable for you to not be comfortable using Shopify. And it's also perfectly reasonable to reject your suggestion that it be completely avoided.
