You might be a Ham fisted Knifemaker when.....

How many of them end up being considerably smaller than what you originally intended? :D My turning point was when I decided to stop trying to 'fix" blades and throw them away if i screwed up. That is what happened to a most of knives 20-50. That eventually made me work slow and careful. This was knife 51 or so that I gave away in he KITH.

LOL!!! Unfortunately I only have about 20 under my belt Here's the worst before and after

From this

To this

And Finally THIS!!

I have others where the end result will just make you laugh but they function lol ;-))

When your spraying the blade with windex for hand sanding and accidentally stab all the way though the bottle.

Josh,

That's not as bad as stabbing the point of a knife you are sharpening into your other hand a good 1/4" when making passes on the belt of your 2 x 72" machine. :D

But, but, but... that was the last of my Windex:(

Your right, its probably better it got the bottle instead of my arm... although then I'd still have Windex:D

Well when you put it that way? :) Whats one more little scar if it saves you from having to leave the shop to buy more Windex.;)

You might also be an idiot if you do what this rube did. Not clamping down his knife when drilling into a Micarta handle with a step drill bit. Here is the result:

Yes, That idiot was me and I AM LUCKY to still have the use of that hand. Use a clamp every timje you drill anything over 5/32 and maybe install a stop on your drill table to avoid the "helicopter blade". Larry

Larry,
I have a matching scar to yours from the first knuckle to the middle knuckles on my left index finger for exactly the same dumb sH(T maneuver!

The Helicopter of DEATH strikes again! I bolted a 1/2" bolt into the tables of my two drill presses as soon as I got back from driving myself to the ER.

The Doctor that stitched me up gave me a compliment, You make very sharp knives Mr. Segal. That's an excellent surgical cut you have there!

I've got a 12" blade I'm polishing the hamon on, with a sweeping plunge. Had it hand sanded to a clean 600 grit, started on 800, and just as I was getting a good rhythm the paper shredded under my sanding stick, which turned into a really nifty sen and gouged a couple DEEP scratches...

Back to 220 on the machine...

YEAH!!!!!!

YEAHYEAHYEAH!!!!!!

All I can say is it's a good damn thing I enjoy hand sanding....

When you're not paying attention and countersink your corby bolts with a 3/8ths bit instead of a 5/16ths bit.... oh well at least it was just canvas micarta and not a $70 piece of koa.

Thats when you make custom loveless bolts....like the rest of us when that happens...lol

I have made 0 knives to date, but have 2 in production. I was drilling tang holes in one of them while the other was resting on top of the drill press which lasted about 10 seconds before vibrating off. I semi successfully got my hand out of the way however the blade I was drilled got picked up the moment I let go. My drill press is small so it hit the stand instead of going helicopter mode.

Not something that I was told, but something I saw here on BF. Clamp anything that goes on the drill press. I purchased a Kant-Twist clamp that bolts to my drill press and clamp down anything I drill except Kydex. My holes are straighter and I've never been worried about tearing open my hand. Best $30 I've ever spent.

Never seen anything like that in the UK, looks ideal. I went shopping specifically for clamps for drilling and tried out a bunch on the same model of drill press in the store showroom but left empty handed as I couldn't find anything that would work well at all.

Until I can find something better I'm going to hold things down using bits of scrap wood clamped over the work with regular clamps at the edge of the table.

Bolt a 1/2" bolt or larger that stands up about an inch into the slot on the table in the third quadrant of the table as you are facing it. That will stop and Helicoptering blades.

Or find on of these, http://www.harborfreight.com/catalogsearch/result?q=Drill+Table+Clamp

When you are so intent on cutting out your latest design out with a small angle grinder and cutting blade that you don't realize you have set your shirt on fire from the sparks.
Do you smell something burning?

Ruined a couple of frayed flannels that way:o

When you re-make the same pair of Micarta scales for the third time before they fit the tang and dovetail bolsters.
