"The new head of the Transportation Security Administration has called for a broad review of the nation's air security system to update the agency's approach to threats and reduce checkpoint hassles for passengers.

Edmund S. "Kip" Hawley, an assistant secretary of homeland security, directed his staff to propose changes in how the agency screens 2 million passengers a day. The staff's first set of recommendations, detailed in an Aug. 5 document, includes proposals to lift the ban on various carry-on items such as scissors, razor blades and knives less than five inches long. It also proposes that passengers no longer routinely be required to remove their shoes at security checkpoints...."

Knives under five inches long...is that the length of the blade or the overall length of the knife?

Well, i am Kip, but not that one... I'm not sure on that. People usually go by blade length, so i'm guessing blade length.

I'll be happy if my Vic Soldier can travel with me again. That and a nail clipper!

Old FAA regulations allowed folding knives with blades less than 4" long. The FAA did give leeway to the individual airlines to be more restrictive if they chose. I still remember going through SFO with my mini AFCK in my pocket. I put it on the little tray along with my keys, wallet and watch and handed it to the security person as I passed through the metal detector. She gave the knife a cursory glance and handed the tray back to me. Ahh, the good old days!

I will never forget the time I walked through security at Logan with my Infinity clipped to my pocket. Right through the metal detector. forgot I had it on untill I sat down.(pre 9/11)

Yeah the old regulations allowed folders with blades less than 4 inches. My Crawford Kasper has a a 3 and 15/16 inch blade and to me that's a really good sized folder. I'd even consider going back on a plane if I could carry my small Sebbie or Mnandi and at least something to file my nails while waiting.

Hope it's gonna happen. I want my SAK Soldier to fly with me on person too. That and my Zippo lighter.

I used to carry a Buck 110 with me everywhere--including planes. I only once had a security guard do some "creative measuring" and say it was over four inches. Of course, back then you could complain without being immediately cuffed and another guard measured it and said, "That's legal." The good ol' days...

It's not gonna happen, not that I care. I don't see the need to have a knife on me while flying. It's not like I'm gonna cut open my bag of peanuts with it and have somebody scream "Terrorist!!". I would rather just pack em in my bag. Would be nice if they allowed them in the carry on, in case they lose my luggage.

It's not that you're so likely to need to use it on a plane, rather the fact that you're told you can't have it, and the whole mentality behind that thinking; that it's better to be regulated in everything you do in exchange for a perception of added safety. The same thinking is riding high in England right now as all the pointy knives are in danger of being banned, 'cause who really needs that other than horrible psycho killers, right?

Considering that the terrorists had Boxcutters and not knives, could a passanger with a Cuda Maxx have been able to circumvent the attack?

Who knows, perhaps someone tried. Even without any weapons, sixty passengers could easily subdue six guys with boxcutters. The principle advantage the hijackers had was that the passengers were ignorant of the intent to crash the planes. It would be interesting to see how post 9-11 travelers would react to a similar situation. I'd bet that the terrorists would have to be removed from the plane upon landing in small ziplock bags.

Its not so much that I would need it on the plane but rather that $400 knives tend to "disappear" from checked bags! :( :D

It would ne nice to be able to travel with out checking luggage, just about doubled my hassel when flying.

Exactly. Who needs one MORE line to stand in?

Besides, NEED has nothing to do with why I like to dress the same every day, same kind of clothes, same basic equipment. Comfortable, prepared. Finicky! :D

I'd like to be able to fly with a multi-tool again. I hate having to go through my luggage to get it at the other end. :)
