I am a half a step slower than I was 20 years ago (okay a whole step) and I can't dunk the basketball anymore but I still think I can handle myself in most situations..at least in those where I can see.
I have been nearsighted all of my adult life and just can't do without glasses.
It seems reasonable to assume that folks heading into wilderness would carry a spare pair, but often they dont. I fell once while fording a stream and my glasses went away in the current. I was in shock from the loss. Other nearsighted folks will know what I mean.

At the time I was 30-40 miles from the nearest road. Fortunately I was not alone. Had I been alone I might well have received a grievous injury making my way back by losing footing or slipping on a poorly chosen bad spot of scale rock or wet mossy trail bank.

Point: Always carry spare glasses, or at the least a couple pair of contacts lenses if you use them.

Damn good point, I'm overdue for a new prescription, when I get new specs the old ones will go in a hard case in my pack.

That's what I started doing. I also found a small little repair kit with some eye glass screws and a screw driver in it that I put in the hard case with the spare glasses. I found most of the small screwdrivers on my multi-tools don't fit the screws on my eye glasses. I wear a lanyard on my glasses too. I have never been a boyscout but, I think I could have been. ;)

Oh HELL yes, I have a bunch of those kits!! Some even have the replacement little foam pads for on yer snout. They're like $2 and will save your weekend if you got a screw loose. I mean if your glasses have a screw loose, ho ho!

No kidding, one in my toolbox at work AND at home, one in the junk drawer, and one in my "jerry-rig-it" kit in my backpack along with the duct tape, electrical tape, safety pins, zip-ties, tent patch, needle and thread, etc. (Come to think of it, the repair kit could be a whole new thread...)

This is kinda funny/dumb, one time in a schoolyard confrontation I actually said "you wouldn't hit a guy with glasses would ya?!?" and the sunuvabiscuit punched me in the belly :( He regreted it tho.

Say, you're not the fella who played Ralphie in the movie Christmas Story. He pounded the dog poop out of the bully who hit him with his glasses on.
No... I guess that would'nt work. That was a movie-you're talking real life. Never mind.

P.S. Don't forget the Visine in the first-aid kit.

LOL I never saw that movie and no, I didn't pound the poop out of him. Just responded in kind... the little b***h fell down so I stopped hitting him. I ended up getting detention for it too, which I felt was pretty unfair...

ANYWAY! Yes, eyesight is super important, please wear your safety glasses in the shop or when shooting, etc, and protect yourself form UV when outside :)

I keep a retention strap in my daypack for when I start to sweat and they keep slipping down my nose. That bugs the heck out of me.
