It always seems to be guys over 60 that fend off the bears (or kill them with hunting knives), what is it that us young whipper snappers need to know- or is it you just aren't willing to lay down and younger guys are too lazy to fight back:confused:;):p

Check out this story:

Makes me glad to carry a Crawford staff nearly everywhere!

You don't have to outrun the bear- just me and I can't run (hardly walk) so I better get some advice!

The son had a lot to learn. The gun was just a 'magic wand' to him as he couldn't hit the bear. You have to be prepared mentaly and physically.
The father did his best with what he had and saved the day.
Besides, we seasoned citizens have lived our lives and don't like to take crap from anyone.

I think old dudes just don't taste as good to bears. The bear probably thinks, "Crap, is this guy out-of-date?" and then just doesn't put up the same fight as he might for a tasty morsel. :p

Knives are for wussies!
Judo Throw Saves Man From Bold Bear

MATSUMOTO, Nagano -- A man used a judo throw to scare off a bear that attacked him while he was picking mushrooms on a Nagano Prefecture mountain Monday afternoon, police said Tuesday.

At around 3:50 p.m., Keiichi Yamaguchi, 63, a resident of Matsuda, Kanagawa Prefecture, was picking mushrooms on a mountain in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, when an Asiatic black bear suddenly attacked him, police said.

The bear bit Yamaguchi on the hand and left thigh and he responded by hitting it on the nose and in the stomach. When he used a judo technique to hurl the bear, it ran away from the scene. The bear was about 170 centimeters long, police said.

Yamaguchi said his injuries are not serious, but he intends to receive medical treatment at a local hospital. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Aug. 19, 2003)

If I recall correctly, he used an O-Goshi hip throw after punching and kicking the bear.

But did they observe protocol and bow to each other before starting the match? :D That's just too funny, good for him!

Wow, great story!

Thats right! Just like most fish; the smaller younger fish taste better than the old larger ones.

That and who really wants to put up with you old cranky bastids:p

I think bears in general better be on their guard... the baby boomers are about to retire in numbers and have more time for hiking.

"The bear doesn't present a threat to the public and likely won't be tracked down, said a spokesman for Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. "

Hmm, Do they mean not after the old_timer taught the bear a lesson or what???

One reason that I started Jujitsu (traditional) is that in 1996 I read of another Canadian that choked out a cougar (not the human kind) after it attacked him. The guy took its back and got a rear naked choke in.

A very wise man once told me;

"No point in getting older, if you don't get smarter with it!"

That man taught me how to live long enough to get smarter!

I agree that mindset and strategy will be decisive, a nicely grained Bo Staff helps too.

There was a guy in north Ga. a couple of years ago that killed a bear with a piece of firewood.
