Do like I do,
"Look honey I could buy that new blade...or that velvet portrait of Dogs Playing Pool would look pretty cool in the living room". Usually it works

I don't think I'll need many more

I'll probably pick up a more "social" knife. The 710 is a little big to whip out in a restaurant (have to trim my 2 year old's straws). Of course, I could carry my Tree Brand four blade folder but the above mentioned wife used it as a screwdriver (snap!). It still has three good blades but...you know.

The true sign of sickness is that I'm considering taking up camping again just so I can get a Busse. That'll be a tough one.

My wife comes by her knife nonawareness naturally. I walked into the kitchen one time to see her mother holding a tomato in her hand and slicing DOWN through it with my 8" Henckels chef's knife

Okay all you knifenuts, I am here to be of assistance. As a minister I am trained to counsel those who have addictions. For a small fee I will assist you and your wife to work through your knife addiction in a positive way. For a very small fee in cash, you will be enabled to purchase the knives you desire without lying, hiding, and other relationship stressing tactics. I will take that small fee, give my wife a portion of it and secret away the rest to purchase the knives I want which will be mailed to my office address. Just contact me and I will help you as you help me

I only need about $340 more dollars to purchase the Tony Bose Case Yukon in Autumn Bone handles...drool!.

I'm guessing he still has armhair.

Man you guys complain about wives, you guys don't still live with your parents. Dued it sucks cuz I'm not old enough legally to buy my own so all my purchases have to go through them and they don't even like the things. All i have to say is that when I marry my wife must be at least ok with my knife and gun hobbies hopefully she'll be into them too:rolleyes: Ohh yah the guy with a gf, you guys aren't even married and she already controls your finances, or from the look of it tries to;) jk well welcome all newbies and have fun and I hope that you never recovor from your new addiction.

Under the mercy,
Trevor

Java, if you forget everything else, remember this:

It is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask for permission. :D

Good luck with the wife man, and welcome to the club.

WELCOME!!!

As you can see we all try to get as many COOL knives as we can in a short period!!

Welcome,
FLY GUY

When I started to collect, I promised my wife that I would never spend more that 75 bucks on a knife. Now I enjoy sleeping in the Garage and those knot holes have found some value.....wolf
Looking to trade a MT for a coleman tent......

Javasutra,

I found my wife to be somewhat "challenging" when I first started buying knives. Although lately she might just give me the "frown". The downside is the more I learn the more expensive the knife I want (read need). So it will not be the number of knives I buy but the cost which will have to be discrete.

Best of luck to you buddy,
Gord.

I some ways it's more dangerous to have a wife who's OK with one's "hobby." Before I realized she was cool about this, I agonized over spending even $100. The other day I noticed that A.G. Russell has the new, limited edition, William Henry Black and Tan Persian as part of the K.C.C. special. Immediately whipped out the credit card and sent off my order.

Dave

Java,

She used your knife as a screwdriver and broke it? This can only mean one thing: You obviously need a new knife! Maybe a nice gents knife like the William Henry Lancet that everyone's been raving about.

Yup, you definitely made a mistake coming to the forums. Since I got here in last October, my bank account has been dry but at least I've been happy! And yes, all or at least most black handled knives do look the same to the female brain.

What's the very best way to spend oodles of money on
new knives?
start making them yourself!

I was thinking about this thread on my way to work this morning (I guess that says something right there!).

Anyway, yeah, I've easily doubled if not tripled my knife collection since finding BladeForums.

My taste has also evolved, from $50 combo-edge to $300 semi-custom and I'm looking at $400-$500 customs now.

WHAT HAPPENED!?!?!

I guess I went through the same thing w/airguns a year or two ago (Delphi Airgun forum) -- bought a $150 springer from Cabelas and wound up sticking about $5K into exotic airguns for everyone in the family. Tons of fun though -- exploding paintballs at 50yds through a 24x scope with a .177 pellet is great!

You poor SOB (stuck on blades).

Just like most addicts I'm sure that the denial stage has already begun. "Receipt? Now where did that go?"; "No dear, it only cost a little more than the one we talked about."; or "Well, uh, DEAR, uh, when I get tired of this one I'll sell it to another would be SOB and use that money to get the next better thing."

Look at it this way, if you pay for the knife yourself you got a knife 3 times as good for only half the price she would have paid for it. You've saved her money!! Since you've heard this one from her I'm sure she'll recognize the logic of it all.

Of course that might be a problem!

Good luck and welcome.

Java,

I guess I'm one of the lucky few....my wife not only "understands", but has become somewhat of a collector in her own right.

When we inherited some Randall's a few years back, my wife and I decided to work at finishing off my friend, our best man, Keith Brown's knife collection(s).

Right off the bat my loving wife stated that I could have all the Al Mar's I wanted, but she was going to collect the older Gerber's.

The Randall's would be "ours". (yeah right...lol)

Then, with some great degree of trepidation I took her along to the Solvang knife show...

Finding little within "my" budget I bought and subsquently sold a Chris Reeve MK VI.....my wife on the other hand spent an hour with Jess Horn and talked him into making her a custom knife to her specs....not an easy feat based on his statement (unofficially) that he wasn't taking orders for 2001, or 2002 for that matter...

Hmmm....maybe I got lucky with this one eh? I think I'll keep her...lol ;)

"Buy Quality and Only Cry Once"

p.s. We're still looking for the Al Mar SERE models VII, IV-B, and 3002-BP, (Green handled mid-sized folding SERE "Border Patrol") models, all NIB or close to it.....and early Gerber MK II's, and FFH's in HS steel.....

I'm not married or dating (probably a good thing) but I too have to worry about my parents. They tend to choke whenever I tell them I want another knife, and choke even more when I tell them how much it'll cost. I haven't yet bought anything costing more than $50, but now I want a Kershaw Boa and can get it for $75. Perhaps I'll say something like, "Wow, look at this awesome knife! It only costs $150! I think I'll get it!". When they get done saying "absolutely not" I can say, "Wow, lookit, I can get it for only $75! What a steal!" When they ask how it's different from all the others, I can say, "Well, it has different colors on it, see?" :) It's my only chance, I think.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone. I finally broke the news to my wife (she does the bills, anyway and would have seen the charge). I didn't get too much grief. Of course, I hadn't bought a knife in several years. The next one will be tougher ;)

I'm still enjoying my 710. I've just about found the right sharpening technique with my Spyderco Sharpmaker. I need to stop, though. My left arm is nearly bald and my right one is looking pretty ragged.

I gave my wife a little Schrade zytel folder I've had for years. Hopefully, it will save some of my nicer ones from doing hardware duty.

Have a great 4th, everyone. I'm going to the lake to do some whittlin'

I believe a little math is in order:

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ + Knives= No $

 r=Very Cool Toys :D

A simple equation once you understand the principles.

You want to freak parents out? Try being their sweet and innocent daughter and starting a habit of daily carrying a spyderco. Yes, I'm an adult and able to do what I want but somehow the idea of one's "little girl" carrying a knife just is more disturbing than when one's son carries one. Go figure.
