I've been here an awful long time, seems I can't remember a BF without my little dancin' bear Avatar or the melting face in my sigline. I'm countin' the missing years too, the ones and posts where the server and BF went crazy and a lot of data was lost, corrupted or otherwise not worth retrievin' so it disappeared into the Ethernet ;) Well I know they were there, and there'a a few of you old timers who remember too.

Anyway that's not the point of this post, the point was to thank a member for a generous thing and bring to the attention of the skeptics that there are genuinely knice people who come here to share their love for knives with others who share the same love. There's a lot more on this forum but the core of this forum has and always should be about knives. All aspects of knives from a user to a collector's tastes are satisfied here and as a result members become friends and not just the original folks here back in the late 90s but new members and old become friends and in the last 20 years here I've made a few and continue to make new ones as we talk.

The nice thing about this place is the atmosphere and folks who are here to get the most that they can out of it and make use of and take advantage of the information available though members dealers, bladesmiths and custom maker/grinders and that's the start of this little story.

As we do on this forum we talk about knives and as a consequence of having a conversation about of all things knives, I had one with a member here and I had mentioned that I had a particular knife and had sold it a long time ago to help pay a bill and had seller's remorse ever since. I've seen it available on eBay and IIRC I believe this member had offered to sell me a similar knife many years ago as a result of another conversation about the same knife. Only he could confirm this because of my memory I'd need a second recollection to give it some validity.

So as a result of talkin' about knives some one reached out to me and made a generous offer that I decided saving like I do every year for the Forum Knife was gonna be the only way but he said there was no rush and I could take my time.

I was happy knowin' that I would be able to replace the knife I had sold. I really liked and used the knife too, I carried it frequently at work in the office and it was a great knife till I needed the money more than the knice knife.

Well 2 days ago amidst the snowstorm and crazy windstorm that came through the mail held true to their email motto, ...through wind and rain and sleet and snow, blah, blah ,blah...

As my daughter ran out to get the mail I recognized the red, white and blue priority mail box and smiled. I wasn't really expecting anything but packages do come for others so I figured I'd find out when she walked through the door.

I was right, wanna see what I found?

A beautiful (Pacific Coast Cutlery)PCC/BarryWood Rotating lock folder. The very knife, rather the same model knife was in the box. I was speechless but only for a moment and then I took it out and as soon as I picked it up I had a flood of memories...

Opening the bottle OD cognac at my BIL's reception, openin' Xmas presents with my daughter when she was 4, even carvin' up some pepperoni and cheese for cheese and crackers with wine at the lake with the Mrs.

I used it a lot in the little time I had it, so when this was what I unraveled from the paper towel I was really touched and appreciative of the gift, thanks William this will hold a special place and know it will be lovingly carried and used. My daughter already has dibs on it should I not have a need for it anymore. (At least I know it won't get sold at a yard sale or given to someone who wouldn't appreciate such a cool and we'll made knife.

Amazing piece of knife history you have there. I have seen pictures of that knife before pertaining to the history of Benchmade.

Very generous member Eric J saw me pining for an HD7 and sent me one free of charge. He stated he no longer needed or wanted it since he was only into traditional knives now. I wanted to atleast offer something in return but I had almost no traditional knives save for a couple of higonokamis. I sent them to him as thanks.

E Eric J thank you so much for the HD7! I absolutely love this knife! Your generosity is so appreciated and despite the wear on the knife it has become one of my favourite!

First of all, kudos to William for his generosity and congrats to you on the knife.

Secondly, AND WAY MORE IMPORTANTLY*, I have that very same knife. It's quite an interesting design, isn't it? I'm told that the original design dates back quite a long time but that Barry resurrected it and refined it (similarly to what Mike Walker did with the liner lock). He made some custom versions until he passed away a few years ago. Knifemaker Mike Irie is his son-in-law and I THINK they made some together before Barry died but the latest Irie knives I've seen haven't featured the swing lock.

*:p

That’s what I love about knives and cutlery in general, there’s always a story to go with it.

I remember a similar story. It is an older design revamped but it is such a solid lock. I have no fear it’ll close on my hand. The stainless handles will break long before the lock fails.

Isn’t it like a butterfly knife in that by holding the handles the knife won’t close even if there wasn’t a lock?

Also can we get some pics of the underside of the other scale so we can see how the locking mechanism works? Pwetty pwease.

I think you should add something to your title... an extremely small amount. As most are...

Thanx for the story and the pics, and to your generous friend... A knife I haven't seen before...
Yes, Ted, there are a LOT of nice folks on this forum and I have seen instance after instance...
I have given, and I have certainly been Gifted or Helped Out by a number of super-people.
Still glad to be here...

You are very welcome! I know you are enjoying it.

I'll get a few more pics up so you could see. It's kinda like a detent friction fit with internal stop pins. Think of it more like the scales rotating around the pivot and the blade till they lock together even with the blade outside of the scales rather than inside.

Yes kinda.

Ted, all I can say is that you must be doing something right to have the good deeds reciprocated back to you. :)
Great knife and another great story.

There's some really kind and generous people here Anthony. :) I still have and love every piece I've ever gotten, even the Jarbenza I got from Greykilt holds a place in my heart and hangs on my workbench for trimmin' pencils. :)

Won't be long till the grind lines are smooth from rubbing and the eventually the pocket/key/change tumble finish most of my using knives get. One of the reasons I try to get as many pics when it's new because after that first honeymoon period, till it gets its first little ding it'll never look as pristine. She'll always look used and cared for but never as pretty as the first day. So I take pics like a new dad and if you've been around you've probably seen a few of my new knives become old knives with character. ;) Kinda like me, an old character. :D
