I would prefer to take the Frontiersman but what I'd do is take the Respect, (which retails for $392, sell it for $325-$350, buy the Frontiersman (currently available from one online vendor for $149) and pocket the difference (less the cost of sale/purchase, if any).

I voted for the Cold Steel Trail Master , but should more fairly be in 3V (or at least San Mai ) to compete price-wise with the Respect .

This poll is kinda unbalanced for price , IMO .

Exactly what I was thinking.

I voted Spyderco Respect.

If the Buck Frontiersman was available in one or their higher end steels, I would have to reconsider.

I love Bucks 420HRC. It is super easy to sharpen, and strong. But the Spyderco respect is a classy little bowie with a better sheath, in a higher grade steel.

If the trailmaster were in a different steel, it would be a different answer as well.

I had a San Mai III Trailmaster for over a decade. Would have preferred a stacked leather handle or a Micarta handle (and I would have kept it then).

No, it's not. It's by no means the optimum knife for all uses. It could easily be argued that it's not even the best all-around knife of the list. Although it does have that snazzy brand name that gets some all worked-up... 😉
An "optimum knife for all uses" isn't really an optimum knife.

Since the Bowie I really want is the Randall #12 Smithsonian, I voted for the Respect - which would give me more money to put down on the Randall.

Look at the sentence structure. I wrote nothing about a knife that does everything the best. What I said was the Respect was not the optimum knife for all uses. In other words, depending on how one typically uses their knives, there are better choices on the list.

Glad to see the venerable Case Bowie getting a vote! It was my #2 behind the monstrous Svord Von Tempsky. I really like the fact that the Svord received much of its inspiration from its heritage in California.

Spyderco, because I don’t have one, have never felt the urge to buy one, and here is the chance to get one for free. Moreover, because its blade is fixed, the hole is purely ornamental and can’t sully the profile of the knife.

Even if it's a used factory second that puts it in the same price category as the others NIB, I'd still choose the Spyderco. It's an interesting knife .
