You'd think he was a Kangaroo as obsessed with his pouch as he is.

Further adventures in the sagga of Wowbagger’s pouch for the Case Stag Trapper.

I’m kind of liking the look of this combination. It displays the beauty of the knife and the knife is more accessible than the snap flap Case pouch. I wouldn’t wear it where there was much risk of a pick pocket snagging it.
Also I prefer the belt clip over the thread the belt through the loop style that the Case pouch has. I change clothes a couple of times a day (street cloths to work duds then street cloths to come home). Long story but it is just easier to use the slip on clip on the nylon strap belt rather than threading through the loop.

The black pouch is a Gerber. It is the larger of the two they make in this style.
I would prefer a near identical pouch but a bit deeper and without the top flap and without the loop that the flap slips into. I may just buy a second Gerber and modify it but figured I would check with you guys first for a better alternative.

PS: It looks like I could just pull the flap over and tuck it in the loop and use this pouch but that is not true. The flap won't reach over the top of the knife far enough to slip into the loop. This pouch is just too short to use it as intended with the Trapper.

I make a few different styles - only for my own personal use ... group pic and also a pic of the knife & pouch I carried on Australia Day Weekend this year when I married my lovely wife. (second time round for both of us)

WB they aren't all that difficult to make - give it a go PM me if you would like a template

PS I do use Kangaroo leather occasionally ... on a weight to strength ratio its very strong

Brumby,

Hey thanks for posting. Good work you've done !
I have a treadle sewing machine that I got for sewing such things. It needs a new belt now and I have been passively thinking about what to use. It had a fat leather lace belt connected together by a steel "staple".

I am picturing a modern material like what comes on bicycle racer's indoor training devices called rollers. I don't want to take the belt off my rollers and the dang things are expensive so I haven't gone further with it. I also have leather sewing needles and the sewing awl with the little thread bobbin in it. I used it the other day to fix The Chef's purse.

So you see I am pretty well set up but have been lazy of late. More inclined to poke a key board and wait for the postman than to push a sewing needle. Thanks for the dope slap . . . it has been over due.

Are you using a belt loop on the back of the pouches you have made or do some have a metal clip ?

I may buy a five dollar cell phone pouch just to get the belt clip and rivet it to my knife pouch . . . that is if I would get off my bum and make a pouch.

Congratulations on the marriage (remarriage ?).

PS: your style pouch is just exactly what I had in mind (but black).

I just made this one the other day that is wet molded to the knife. The retention on it is very good as the knife locks into place because of the molding. You may want to have someone make you one that is molded to your trapper.

Wowbagger, if you don't want to leave the keyboard, Tandy has those belt clips on their website. That's where i get mine. rtmind/Randy

Thanks guys :

Brumby,
Pocket slips . . . aaaah I’m getting th’ idea now. I wish I had used one for my lately purchased Stockman red bone CV. I had it in my pocket with a comb and a little jar of ointment and now it is scratched but good. Can’t figure how that happened. Oh well it’s a user and I just got it to try out CV but the knife deserves better treatment.

I was over on Google looking at 40 pages of pocket pouch listings. Mostly the same dang pouches over and over. I’m a little cross eyed from it all.

Seems like if a person wants one they make it or get it made. I did see the slanting carry style your Trapper is in. That caught my eye / really nice.

Flash . . . if you saw me you would be glad for a touch of flash; gives the eyes a welcome break from having to look at the rest of the package.

Mt.glider,
Nice job !

rtmind,
Tandy; there we go. Small Belt/Holster Clip. they even have it in black (since I am making a black holster. Nice !

I’ve already got the black leather so I have no excuses (bought to fix a car seat. similar to what is in the Wenger (I said Gerber in my OP but meant Wenger) . not thick enough to mold though/got to think about this . . .) .

Wow if your leather is thin (and made for seat repair) it is probably chrome tan and won't mold worth a darn any way. Might try something like this. Its kinda a cowboy version of what Brumby did.

This is often called a "Buckaroo Pouch". Basically its a small sleeve and fits around the knife. It has a leather string (I use 12"x 1/2"), sewn on. The other end of the string has a slit down the center about 2 -3" long. The string goes around your belt loop and the knife in the pouch goes in your pocket. The pouch protects your knife from other items in your pocket and retrieving it is easy. Ya just pull on the string.

The pouch fastens to the belt loop by passing through the slit in the other end of the string:

It then sticks down into the pocket.

This is a very popular option for pocketknife carry. There are literally thousands of them out there, I know I've personally made a bunch. Another cool thing about this deal is it is very easy to adjust it for different knives. Here is one for a Buck110ish size knife.

I make these pouches in two different sizes and it covers bout everything a guy would want to carry in his pocket. The sleeve doesn't have to fit very exact, the soft leather conforms to the knife and it stays put. I make em a little deeper than some. Ya just squeeze on the closed end of the pouch and the folder slides right out.

CONGRATS Brumby!!!!!!

Thanks Dave!
That way of fastening the knife back to the belt loop .... simple but very effective. I'll give that a go myself. Actually I could easily retro-fit one to any of my existing pouches.

Dave,

Hey thanks for that. It (and Brumby's ) solves one problem I was running into with the small belt clip and that is when I wear my tool belt at work it doesn't work to have the knife pouch on my pants belt. I was carrying the knife in my pocket in the belt pouch just so I could have the knife with me and not scratch it up.

Yah, you're right about that car seat leather; no way it's going to take a set from trying to mold it.
In the interim the price of the black store bought pouch (Wenger) dropped and I bought a second one. The Case Trapper fits nice and snug in it (where my SAKs had stretched out my first one) so not much chance of it jumping out. It's getting me by for now, other than at work, and is such a nice pouch I will use it for other knives if I make one for the Case. I found I could fold the flap backward and tuck it in between belt clip and pouch and it looks good. I might put a stitch in it to hold it if needed but no need so far. I was originally going to cut off the excess flap length and stitch it across to look right.

A side note. I am finding the Case Trapper to be quite useful and have not sharpened it yet. The factory edge is hanging in there and though it is very toothy, (I'm a polished edge / push cuttin' kind of guy) the factory edge just keeps cutting and being a work horse. I'm not used to that experience from a factory edge on an "inexpensive" knife. Usually I use a new knife a time or two, cuss and reach for my stones.
