On vacation this past summer, I had the opportunity to play with my SAK and some really young coconuts. My father always told me the young coconuts have a really soft inner core and don't need to be cracked. Sure enough, SAK 1, coconut 0. The blade made it right through and my girlfriend really liked using the mashed up meat as a a skin moisturizer. Just goes to show you, the SAK, as you guys know, is really a great tool.

Cool thanks!

Now obviously if I am ever without a knife of some sort...usually have at least a small fb, and always my SAK...something has gone terribly wrong. But knowing first hand just how quickly things can go wrong...did it seem soft enough that you'd be able to get into it with a sharp/broken oyster or similar shell, or maybe a stick sharpened with a shell, and access the water without spilling/losing it?

I used to harvest a lot of coconuts in Florida...just never experimented with the young ones fearing they wouldn't be very sweet and having plenty of tools to get into the mature ones without smashing them. I used to use an ice pick sometimes to punch through the "eyes" to drain the milk. I am thinking the awl on the SAK might work for that... but this subject without a knife has my curiosity.

MW,

I started my experiment by using the end of the SAK as an impact tool. It made a neat 1"x3/4" hole but I was impatient and just cut through it eventually. Even a small shard of sharp stone would work wonders. No worries.

Ah cool thanks, I'll have to keep this in the mental data base

My father still lives in Tampa, I hope to get down to see him again soon.
