Your Best Cardboard Cutting Knife

A spyderco delica is a great cardboard cutting knife. If you get it in vg10 it holds an edge for a good while yet is not a beast to sharpen like zdp189.

What he said. Having said THAT, the ZDP Delica, when dull, provides a great deal of solitary serenity while one sharpens it, particularly on natural stones.
 
The Spyderco Para 2 in CTS 20CP will cut cardboard for a LONG TIME! I also have some knives made by Alan Davis that will do the trick too!! Kevin :D:thumbup:
 
Do you guys prefer a serrated edge or toothy plain edge?

I've been wanting to get a knife from the spyderco salt line. H-1 steel is attractive given its properties and that the fact that the cutting edge on the SE knives are "work-hardened" to the mid upper 60s makes me more inclined to buy one.

My only question is how does a spyder-edge cut on cardboard?

You are going to have to saw through cardboard with a serrated knife. I like a highly polished edge for pretty much everything but the kitchen. My Leatherman has a serrated blade for when I need one.
 
That goes to my Emerson Mini Commander with a 20 degree edge. That thing slices like no body's business. On a side note, would that be 20 degrees inclusive seeing as its chisel edge bevel on a V grind?
 
My best cardboard cutter currently is a chef utility pattern I just made in CPM 4V. Wide thin blade with a .012" thickness behind the edge. I processed about 15 pounds of cardboard into 3" squares a couple days ago and the knife was a dream to use. Would glide through like it was printer paper.
 
For the sake of this thread and as I mentioned earlier, lets exclude utility knives/box cutters. >.> I know the thin blades and edge geometry make them ideal for cutting boxes, but if I wanted to know that, why would I have made this thread.

Keep it more fun and interesting instead.
 
My 710 in m390. It's "dull" right now because apparently I'm an idiot when it comes to getting a nice fine edge on this steel. I feel like when I first tried to get vg10 razor sharp and just couldn't get that wire edge gone. The recurve doesn't help my difficulties either, but it's still moving through cardboard like warm butter. It's a cardboard eating machine.

My regular sabre grind, factory edge angle Delica is pretty much a box monster too.
 
I've got a $15 husky, that has a quick release for utility blades that I picked up at home depot, spare blades are about $10 for a 50 pack. The blade gets dull and I flip it over then dump it when both sides are not usable anymore.

Sorry I didn't read your last comment, for general cutting I have a fixed blade skyline that does a pretty good job. I don't think its the knife though, the previous owner had someone on the forum put it through a wicked edge system. The WE is pretty nasty! Puts a really fun edge onto a knife that system, better than me free handing it admittedly.
 
A number 8 or 9 Opinel. JUst glides through cardboard, and when it gets dull, sharpens up again in a few minutes. If not an Opinel. a plain old Stanley utility knife.
 
I can't remember the last time I needed to cut cardboard where this would be something to think about. I know it's BF and you like to talk about using knives to cut everything but I'm more of a use the right tool for the job person and a knife isn't the best tool to cut cardboard - a box cutter is. Sorry for not playing along.
 
I can't believe nobody has suggested an Opinel yet!!! Mine slices through cardboard like a hot knife through butter, even when dull. Plus, they are cheap as heck and cool to boot!

Amen. My two Opinels (6 and 8) beat them all. By a country mile.
 
Also, cut the box in an angle so thr cut is wide (hard to explain). But the inside of the box (cells?) Shows no fiber tears, otherwise I polish again.

Now that I have photobucket I will take pictures of extreme angle cuts when I can.
 
If you know how to sharpen you can get even thick harduse knives to cut through cardboard like butter.

my kukri is a heavy chopper but with polished edges it cuts through cardboard clean and still chop.

why not have a good edge on every knife?
 
I use my Spyderco M4 Mule for this kind of work. The M4 keeps its edge for an entire work day.
