my girlfriend made a good point the other day. she told me... you can make fires and cut stuff and make a ton of things with para cord but......she then pokes me in the side.....what did I just poke?
my side! I answered....
no kidding she said back. what muscle or bones or organ is right there..
hmmm..
i made up some stuff real quick that sounded good.
she said instead of survival books maybe you should read a few medical books too....
(by the way she is an occupational therapist)
I hate it when she knows she's right..
I did however start looking at organs and bones and stuff..

do you guys ever look into arteries and organs when thinking of outdoor survival. if you were to get ahold of someone in an emergency situation would you be able to tell them what is wrong?

Goon point Boomer, or maybe Boomer's girlfriend. I never really thought about that, I never did do well when it came to anatomy.

ha.. fish always knows best... she has a good point..:o

i used to be a wilderness first responder for many years...

When I read the title "your body" I thought it would be about being in shape. Being in decent physical shape would certainly be a plus in any survival situation. I don't see this mentioned much but I'm sure it's should be just as important as anything anyone could carry in a kit.

I had to smile reading your post. I can't tell you how many post I have read here on defending oneself with a blade...but have no idea of where the bodies organs are, tendons etc.....

As you get older you will learn where all those organs and body parts are. Your doctor will tell you as they start to hurt.:D

Truth. :o

Luckily for me I was a medic in the military and taught CLS for years. I do agree that people should have at least a basic knowledge of first aid. It always amazes me how ill prepared people are, even when in their own home.

i dig you on the basic knowledge of first aid. I can stitch, band aid, compress, splint all of that. but if blood it gushing out of your side... what did you puncture. what symptoms are you feeling.
I was talking to a friend about this same thing today. I thought about it, I remember thinking I pulled my back out bad one day. the next morning in agony I drove myself to the ER. I had a kidney stone. that's kinda what I am leaning toward. do you know what is wrong if you are having pains in gut, or in your chest.

Ditch medicine is not important until you need it!

It's not only a good idea to have a good first aid kit, it's good to have a selection of first aid manuals and spend some time reading them.

I've read a lot of threads that say you should practice your fire starting, and other survival skills, before you actually find yourself in need of those skills to survive. It's a good idea to read up and practice a little first aid too.

How many people here can do CPR?

As a retired Army Medic I have always had first aid kits stashed in various places, some fairly large ones in my truck and even when I pull them out to help someone I get looks of why do you need all that stuff . It is not so much the stuf but the knowledge to use it.

I just read an article today saying that the CPR is best given to the beat of the BeeGee's 'Staying Alive.' They said the song comes in at 103 beats a minute and the current recommended CPR rate is 100 beats per! Certainly not what I was first taught back in the day!

;)My wife says I'm preocupied with my organ

Well I'll say HD that there is funny, don't care who ya are...............

but seriously it is a good reason to hike with someone so if something happens you can say "hey, hold this" or or "put your finger here" and no not there or like that.

so while HD is occupied with his organ, you want people to put fingers in places and have them hold stuff the way you like it........hmmmmmmmmm:D

I agree with getting the wilderness first responder course. Might have been mentioned, but many internal organs cause pain in the limbs or other areas. the most well known is the heart's tendency to cause pain in the left arm and jaw during a MI (heart attack) its also gives you an idea of what is minor and can "sleep off" or when you should make tracks for the trailhead.

That's what I thought too. I'll try to remember it next time I crave macdonalds or have a few beers and an occasional smoke. MODERATION!

I took the first aid course twice and have forgotten at least half of it.
My best friend is trained as an EMT, so hopefully he will be out with me if I get hurt, or he's concious if he does.

Hmm. Guess I should include an iPod along with my kit.

I was driving down the road today and I heard the very same newscast. Apparently, students were instructed to listen to the song several times until it was burned into their memories, and even after the song was no longer played, they continued to perform CPR with a rhythm similar to the song. That doesn't lend much use to me as a first aid responder, however, since that song makes me choke and and have a heart attack myself. Of course, me pumping away at one's chest to the beat of Merle Haggard's "Yersterday's Wine" probably does nobody any good either. :grumpy:
