If the Sebenza is too much $$$$, like it is for most of us, check out the Columbia River framelock. The S-2 now comes in a sub 3" size.

Beretta has folders that have metal cut out of the blade so they are extremely light but I don't think they are tough.

Benchmade 705. Blade is just under 3", and thing is built like a tank. Seriously, I've never felt a knife this size which felt this solid. I really see no contest in this size range among factory knives. It may be a little heavier than some of the others mentioned, but weight and toughness are pretty much directly related. Still, it's a fairly small knife, and the liners are partially drilled-out to reduce weight; it certainly doesn't feel heavy to me.

Small Sebenza, Spydie Wegner Jr, Spydie G10 Rookie, Carnivore Cub (not sure if it's sub-3", but it must be close).
Sure would be interesting to see a BM Pinnacle JR.

Thanks for the replies guys,I have a Crkt KFF which I love but the thing is so darn heavy,I also keep a Spyderco Ladybug on my keychain.I really think my next knife will be a BM 705,everybody that owns one seems to love it and they say the axis lock is super strong.Alot of people have been talking about the LCC by Microtech but I think the blade is over 3" so I couldnt carry it in Delaware, that sucks cause the knife sure does look sweet,Carbon handles w/Titanium bolsters,Dam.Crkt's small S-2 model looks rather nice too,ATS-34 steel w/Titanium slabs which helps keep the weight down,Hmm.....decisions....decisions....

Get an Outdoor Edge Field Lite in either spear or clip point. Only 3oz and less than $40....and very well made. I did a mini review of this knife in the Review section. It is a great light-weight knife. I just ordered another!

I highly rek'mnd the BM Mel Pardue 350 in Combo set up with the BT2 coating. I carried that knife exclusively over a long, hellish summer of outdoor trails.

This puppie did everything; cutting metal one minute to slicing tomatoes five minutes later!

It is slim, light, and the lock was damn strong considering!

Give it a try, less than $50, good to have around regardless.

Steve's right! I'd forgotten about the 350-great little knife; very lightweight, good lock-up (at least mine was), and excellent ergonomics. Great little daily carry folder.

If just a hair under 3" is ok try a microtech kestrel or vector.

Agree with the smaller Spydercos but if you want tough then the Microtechs are the go IMO, a heap of cutting power in a small tanklike package

A very inexpensive strong lightweight knife is the CKRT Lightfoot Urban shark. I like the 3" version (which is actually about 2.8").
