Just wondering what you guys choose to carry, a multitool or SAK? Post which model you carry, and why you chose it.

My normal edc

the little s4 has been on my keys for a few years I went though a phase of trying out all sorts of key chain companions, I like the Micra a LOT but then found the scissors on the s4 are a little more refined and I like the tools and access to the without opening up the scissors very hand on this little guy. I like a sak as well but for some reason the less useful traditional folder is always my preferred carry. I've tried a lot of Alox and like them a bunch but ultimately they are too easy t par with when I need some extra cash, I'm planning on trying more red plastic scaled saks for now (even the the fit finish and strength of the alox tools seems to be better) basically because I don't think I'll sell them when I get them. Also I'd like to try doing some scales for the saks.

I guess the biggest reason I prefer traditional knives to saks is that the traditional knives, carbon steel and all, age in a more appealing way to my eye, they feel more like a companion, which is a cray thought to have about a knife, I know, but hey, knife nut

Sorry for the long answer bu I've been thinking about it a little as I try to pair the knife horde down a little :)

now if I carry a sak it is this one

wouldn't get anything to sell it and I like the tool line up and wengers fancy scales design :) I guess I'm trying to find a sak, or a knife that makes me appreciate it like the 68 and the s4, they are both good respectable knives but I don't feel like I'm carrying a "good knife" when I have them just "my knife/tool etc" not better then this knife or that knife not the best, not the hottest, etc

Kind like the Toby and Iris knives, but you asked about saks so....:)

The Wenger you posted is the same as the one that hangs in my shop, gets a lot of use.

COOL, what are the odds :)

I also forgot to mention the only reasons the sak you re handled for me isn't listed is because it's on another very short list "Knives Missing in Action" as far as I can recall there's only one other knife on that list an it's another ask, an alox cadet I had liked a lot that syph, forum member here, modded with a saw and screws instead of pins for me. I don't know where either are, last time I remember them they were with me cutting wood, so I guess there sitting on a stump somewhere in Eastern Kentucky when I sak to take a break or something :(

The other multi-tool I use I now consider my dedicated running knife, it was a gift form a forum member here, and it was my edc for a few months, better then most, it's nicely made very slim (fits in a running punch) takes a nice edge and has that X factor thing going for it to my eye :)

oh and this thing live sin my hiking/going out in the woods bag

Sorry, John, don't mean to rabbit on....guess you hit on a subject I have been thinking about a lot :)

Exactly - which is why I can no longer answer this question. I have had so many good multitools and a few SAKs but they all ended up staying in a truck or on the bench or in the boat bag. Carrying them around is such a compromise to having a real knife that is sharp. I guess I'm never far enough away from a pair of pliers or tweezers that the multi-tool was ever worth carrying as an EDC. There is always one in the gear bag for every trip though - just in case :). Mostly this one, for no better reason than it has a decent sheath.

I always have a Classic on my keyring, and will be putting ivory micarta handles on a Recruit in the near future for EDC. Like most, I keep one of several Leatherman multitools in my bag, which goes on trips with me. (plus I keep a full set of tools in the Cherokee, but that does not count)

I love the Leatherman Surge, but it is so damn heavy that, even while wearing a belt, I have to keep pulling my pants up.

Leatherman Surge lives in my bag, but my SAK-style knife is usually a G Sakai Fieldman Trekking Tool. It gives me a bunch of handy tools, but also a ZDP-189 main blade to satisfy my inner steel junky.

Runner-up is a Vic Tourist for when I'm traveling. I've found that a corkscrew is pretty hard to rig when you don't have one.

I carry that black Pioneer that I got from you a few months ago. Pretty much the perfect toolset.

Jeff

I used to carry a Vic Classic everyday, but traded it out for a Rambler because of the Phillips screwdriver option along with the other tools found on the Classic.
The tweezers, scissors & tooth pick get used more than the pen blade.
My woods wandering SAK has to have a saw, so I carry either a Ranger or a Hercules.
And my SAK has to have tweezers & a tooth pick so no ALOX for me.
I had a LM Surge, but it was stolen out of my truck & I gave away the Wave I had.
I find I prefer the light weight Vic's better than a heavy MT & the Hercules has pert near the same tools as a MT at half the weight.(approx)
I carried a Vic Champ on my belt for ten years or more when a mechanic in the Marines & it got used hard but is still going strong, though it is pulling side table duty nowadays.

It depends. I carry a scout type knife an most days but I always have my SOG tool on my pack that sits next to me in the truck.

Just about every day I have this Vic rambler on my key chain,as well as the Pioneer in my pocket. I guess the pockettool Brewzer on the keychain is a multi-tool as well.

Leatherman Charge TTi rides in my bag, but I don't have a pic of it.

i don't think it's a secret here that i am fond of the Vik Farmer. it rides in my pocket every day.

i also will put a Leatherman Wave on my belt if i am fishing or camping (etc.).

i got the Wave from the exchange a while back (i think). my requirements (other than the obvious stuff) is a saw and scissors. i like the wave too because the outer tools lock (knife (PE and serrated), saw, file). also the plier jaws include cutters. i am not familiar enough with LM to know if that is common, but it is really helpful to me when fishing. i do carry a separate plier and cutter combo in my fishing bag, which i mostly use, but it's still handy to have.

the downside, as some have mentioned is weight, but i don't notice it on my belt after a while.

went for a long (for me) paddle down the river yesterday, fishing for walleye. i noticed that one of my line guides on my rod lost the smooth metal insert. the remaining guide edge was sharp. i took the file out and was able to touch it up. saved the day. i didn't catch a fish, but STILL! :D

vik huntsman in the pocket along with a leatherman electrician tool -- no idea what model, it was a limited run for Radio Shack a dozen years ago.
I also have a gerber prodigy keychain tool in the other front pocket and a mid-80's vintage gerber multitool in the lunch bag.

I normally carry a Leatherman Supertool on my belt and at work a Pioneer Harvester in my pocket. At home still have the Supertool but usually not a SAK. I use my alox SAK's when I think about it and even bought one for a nephew as his first "multitool" because I thought he was a little young for a Gerber Suspension that I bought for his older brother. (I got two more of those and gave them to my brother to hand out when he thinks the younger two nephews are old enough.) I never got into the more advanced Leathermen like the Wave as I'm left-handed. But I was at the western store the other day and they have a Supertool 300 with a little keychain sized Leatherman with the scissors I'm thinking about picking up. Need to check out access to the tools again. I like the unlock levers much better than having to partially open another tool to unlock the one I've been using.

I use that Harvester at work because it is two blades, nothing fancy, good grip, and don't care if tape gets on the main blade. And the hawkbill comes in handy for opening the high strength bolt seals from their plastic packaging.

I have a Leatherman Micra that's been on my keychain and carried every day since my wife gave it to me some 15+ years ago. Before that I had a SAK Classic on my keychain. For EDC keychain carry I prefer the Micra for it's tools that I use all the time - really good scissors, bottle opener, tweezers that don't get lost. The only thing the SAK has over it is a better blade, but I always have a knife on me so that's not an issue and the Micra blade is rarely used.

When camping or backpacking, I carry a Leatherman Juice S2 in a pouch on the belt. The pliers come in handy for grabbing hot pot bails and the other tools on it are also useful in camp.

I prefer an alox SAK for the size. I carry a cadet. Handy little tools in a sturdy little package. I also have a tinker I carry occasionally and a letterman in my backpack but the cadet gets the nod more often than not.
