I was wondering what your favorite kind of firesteel is. What brand do you stand by, and what you recommend to someone looking for their first. THANKS

I have one from Brunton that I carry and use but I also just ordered one from ESEE knives.

Like Scott said.
LMF all the way.
I am not a big fan of the firesteels that when you strike them globs come off.
just a little spark is all I have ever needed some may need globs. either way they are all good. Just my preference.

My Strikeforce, A 1/2" rod really throws the sparks !

2nd that . It's a little big , but always works and throws a good shower , and you can keep little fatwood sticks in the handle ,or PJCB's .Actually bought a spare one tonight coincidentally , in orange so it's easy to spot.
I also keep a Blastmatch in my survival kit.

This here is my most favourite. Its a Strike Master.I buy them at a market when I visit Portland OR.
Magnesium, loads of sparks from the striker and the wood handlecan also be used as tinder material.Im on my 3rd one

Goinggear.com - Badger 3/8"x4" - GREAT firesteel.
I used the LMF originally, then tried the Going gear firesteel.

I really like using the Going gear firesteel to light natural tinders. I don't bring tinder when I go out in the woods. I practice finding and using only natural tinders. A rainy or snowy day takes some experience.

I like, and use, both the LMF and Going Gear firesteels. But in a scenario where I could only pick one? I guess I would pick the LMF Army model or one just like it but bigger. Now...if the nano came in a 3/8 dia. version I'd take it.

On second thought...I take that back. If I can only pick one I'll take the Strike Force, same sparking characteristics as the LMF only larger and has an large handle and built in striker.

I've only ever used a LMF Soldier one, it's worked great for me so far. Slightly modified striker though, ground out the teeth bits on one side of it into something that resembles a recurve of a knife, it works well. No theory behind it, sorry. I just felt like doing it.

Goinggear. I'll take globs of sparks over sparse sparks any day. If I ever NEED the frigging thing, I'll want fire fast. No fugging around for me please. I like to practice but in an emergency, I want the most spark I can get. Goinggear all the way.

Anybody have experience with firesteel.com stuff?
I have steels from firesteel.com and goinggear, In my experience using both brands, the fs.com are a bit harder to spark than gg, but they throw bigger sparks.
