Hello everyone, I very rarely post on this particular forum although I would like to start.
I'm very curious to see what folders others feel are ideal for wilderness work. What do you use and why? Your real world expierieces would be interesting and valued as well.

For my part I'm partial to the SERE 2000 it seems to work well for me in a wide variety of roles. I've used it to cut cordage, cut vegetation for firing lanes and Camoflage as well as all sort of food prep tasks. It seems to still work well when exposed to wetness, grit, dirt and generally less than Ideal conditions. Edge retention though isn't everything it could be. I wouldn't mind seeing this blade in D2.

Edited to add- I see this thread as been done (shouldn't have been a surprise) so how about if we narrow it down to real world expieriences w/ a folder for practical woods work?

A well-equipped SAK is hard to beat, as in a pinch it will serve so many different purposes. I've used mine to cut all kinds of stuff, saw through small branches, fix other people's broken stuff when I'm camping with friends (my stuff is pretty hardy), tweezers to pull out thorns/splinters, and the super toothpick to pick at my teeth. .

For Wilderness work I usually carry a 4" fixed blade, some times I will carry a 6-7" chopper. I also carry a small folder in my front pocket. That folder is always a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. My favorite model is the Silver Alox Farmer model. The Farmer has a great wood saw that really cuts, an awl that spark a firesteel like nothing else, and a good size stainless blade for smaller tasks.

I will say my Vic Outrider, I don't carry it daily but when in the woods it is with me. I love the saw and the awl and the scissors and of course the large locking Blade is great also. You just can't loose with a SAK! Being a Red Blooded American Soldier, I always have a good Leatherman on me as well. So for me it is a combo thing! A Leatherman and a SAK for the wilderness!!!!

My experience has been that the folder I most enjoy using is my locking-blade SAK w/ saw...I think it's the Rucksack model.

Otherwise, I carry a thin-bladed sharp little folder like the Calypso Jr. I use a fixedblade for anything heavy duty.

SAK alox Farmer with attached Photon II light....it's small and light enough to be carried in my pocket at all times. The Photon has come in just as handy as the saw.

My 35 year old Buck 110 Hunter. For a folder out in the boonies, it does whatever I need.

A Vic Rucksack was my standard for years, and is still the best knife for cooking chores, but I have given my heart away to a Case CV trapper. It slices heavy materials way better, and there is no comparison in edge holding. The only problem with it, is that it tends to pit a little, rather than just patina, however I like it so much I have decided to find this charming. And I always have a Leatherman Wave on me anyway, so I dont need the inferior SAK tools.

Leatherman Wave is always with me.

Because I am lefty I prefer something that I can open with my Left hand so that is why I always have more than the leatherman wave.

I used to have a balisong in my front left pocket ( At this moment I have my Typhoon, a Darrel Ralph design ), it is the best cutter that I have.

I am sure that you can do what you need to do with the Leatherman wave or a SAK.

Open with one hand is the feature that I always consider because you never know when are you not going to be able to use your two hands.

The Victorinox Rucksack is probably my favorite.

I really wanted to like the alox Victorinox Pioneer Harvester more since it's all metal, but the Rucksack is just more comfortable to actually use.
The large handle is very nice.

I usually carry a fixed blade when in the woods but when folder is all I have Strider SMF fits the job rather nicely.

I'll throw in another vote for the Victorinox SAK. I switch between the SAK and an older Victorinox made German military utility knife.

Apart from an SAK, I usually bring a Spyderco Endura. A light knife which is also a great cutter.

Well I have used a 110 alot both in the bush and around town so it is a knife I trust and value alot. For a little over a year I have been using swiss army knives and am really sold on them. They are not a replacment for a tool box but they are very useful and will work in a pinch.
As of now I am edc a sak and I add the 110 when appropriate. I have been giving serious thought to replacing my 110 with a fixed blade of similiar size but time will tell. I have a lot of history with the 110 and it has never let me down.
