Your favorite for at home surgery

One memorable do-it-myself job was removing a few stitches from the inside of my nostril, from an accidental wound received while playing with my brother's dog, a Bouvier.
I used nail clippers to remove the stitches. The clipping action worked well. Saving money was not a factor, as our health insurance system covers this sort of procedure. I just did it myself because I wanted to and I could. And I'm smart. (funny). And good looking. (funny).

I think we should task Cliff Stamp to test a variety of knives for home surgery use. This test will definitely require dozens of knives on numerous conditions. Ultimately, he may need to perform hundreds of home procedures on his body. But the sacrifice will be not only for his own research, but for the benefit of the greater knife community...so it will all be worth it.

I use a Maddog MirageX Micro which is a ceramic blade, the kind prefered by surgeons as it is chemically inert and doesn't cause any reactions to the parts laft behind. Because of this and it's extreme sharpness, healing is faster.

I'd have to go with razor blade. Nothing cuts like one of them. Nothing.

I think many of us would have to disagree......

As sods law would have it, whatever needs doing is usually on my right (good) hand, so I definately perscribe to nothing too big so I don't intimidate myself :D
Usually go for the Spyderco Kiwi, as well as being extremely sharp it has a wicked needle point.

My major physical health problem are recurring cases of ingrown toenails. Liberal use of Vicodin, Cepocol spray (topical anesthetic) strong needle nose pliers and tweezers and the small blade on a SAK does very well.

Boring as it may be, for most of mine I just use a scalpel blade now. Started keeping one in little first aid kit in jacket after forgetting pocket knife at work one night and only having a very dull box cutter to work with. but had a splinter that was literally a bit over an inch long, and wide, and had to get it out. so cut along splinter with that dull blade for a while, finally got it out,t hen dosed with alcohol wipes. man that hurt. I put scalpel blade in from my big kit as soon as I got home next morning(graveyard shift at wally world, splinter from a pallet)

It's amazing how many people work around pallets all day long and how few of them carry or use a cheap pair of leather work gloves.

well i got a problem with ingrown toe nails and they hurt something bad and to remove them till they grow back again i use a schrade 120T. its razor sharp and cracks through nail easy as...plus its small enough for splinters, glass in ya foot (ouch) and all other small tasks.

You can have the sides of the nail permanently removed to eliminate having to do this. You have to go to a podiatrist(sp) to have it done. I seemed to constantly have ingrown nails until I had this done.

Be careful when working on an ingrown toenail yourself. I did this before and gave myself an infection that took a while to clear up even though I thought everything was sterile.
