  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Your favorite outdoor boots

I wear the Gramont T6 Tactical Elite Boot. They have been up and down the mountains of Afghanistan and served me well.

I wear what I guess you'd call army surplus jungle boots. I picked up a used pair of desert boots from the local army surplus store and wore them almost constantly for about a year after which although they are still wearable they now need some repairs to the uppers. However the tread is still in great shape. That is a big consideration for me as i tend to walk on the outside soles of my feet at I've wore down wal mart brama work boots down on the outsides of the soles to the point they where dangerous to my ankles in only 2 or 3 months of wear. I should mention that i work on my feet all day. Anyway, i recently purchased (2 mths ago) a brand new pair of standard army jungle boots from the local military surplus that gets them straight from the same company(s) that supplies the military. I put in a gel insole insert and they are very comfortable. I also bought a pair of the insulated combat boots as well and they are extremely warm. They are all I wear now, at home or in the woods. As I recall I paid about $35 for the used desert boots, about $60 for the new insulated, and about $55 for the new jungle boots. I don't wear them just for the novelty of wearing combat boots. I wear them because they are comfortable, inexpensive compared to what I've seen in shoe stores, and and I don't have to replace them every few months.

I keep trying different boots, but I always seem to return to Vasque Sundowners.

I have very little luck with synthetic materials, such as Gore-tex, that make my feet more wet from sweat than the actual protection they provide. I really dislike any foam in my footwear, too. So, I have most of my boots custom made by the Russell Moccasin Company. I have worn a variety of handmade Russell boots from Alaska to Africa and find them to be the most comfortable, light weight, durable, water-resistant boots I have ever worn. I always order my Russell boots with double-vamps (all leather!) for moisture protection. Russell's are not inexpensive up front, but in the long run of things, I find them less expensive since they can be resoled and, overall, last much longer than other brands of boots that I have tried. Too, there are those times when you just can't put a price limit on comfort...especially after financing an expensive hunting trip on one end of the globe or the other. :)

I have very bad feet and week ankles due to an injury. I cannot tolerate multi mile hikes in uneven terrain. I have a pair of Irish Setters lightly insulated and water proof that are over thirteen years old, that I can tolerate. I have bought boots and shoes in the past that I cannot wear at all.

Not to hijack this thread(not entirely at least) but I have a very wide foot at the top of the toes. Most shoes I try on are too tight across this point. It is generally at the point of the lowest lace.
Does anyone know a good boot that is wider at this point? How do I even begin my search?

Try Dunham , they're made by new Balance - I wear an 11 - 11 1/2 EEEE and I find them comfortable. stick with their lasts ending in 2 - as they're a bit wider in the toe box. (SL2, not SL1, etc...)
Cabela's also offers some of their house brand boots in these kind of wide sizes.

otherwise look for xwide and xxwide. sometimes you can find 5E and 6E shoes as well.

A pair of Wolverine steel toed slip on boots in bull hide. Tough as nails and non slip traction.
