Your favorite outdoors writer?

Edward Abbey is my favorite author of all time. Many books but I recommend starting with the Monkey Wrench Gang.

It is hard to catorgize Abbey but radical environmentalist anti Big Government probably aptly apply.

BTW one of his books The Brave Cowboy was made into a movie called Lonely are the Brave with Kirk Douglas. Movie is very good(loosely based on book) but book is awesome.

Robert Ruark's short stories for Field and Stream.
Proenneke's One Man's Wilderness.
I'm lookin' forward to reading Pete Fromms work as well.

One of the great blessings of having been in the knife business has been the friendships developed with the great outdoor writers of my generation.

Elmer Keith, Warren Page, Pete Kuhlhoff, Col. Charles Askins and so many others in fact every gun writer working, except Jack O'Comer.

Today I like Ross Seyfried, Pat Covert and Mac Overton. I do not know Bradford Angier but his books are still in print.

Some of my favorites are
Dan Shecthman
Steven Dick
John Larsen
Chuck Karwan
Charles Alsheimer

Bill Heavey cracks me up. He's the first thing I read when I get my Field & Stream.

Hemingway paid attention and gets the details right.

Rat, Did you hear Outdoor Life fired Patrick McManus a week or two ago? Budget cuts don't you know. Not going to be the same magazine without him on the last page.

I too love Abbey. My favorite is Desert Solitaire. His descriptions and thoughts about the southwest blow me away every time. I can't decide if I like his fiction or nonfiction better. Quite a writer whichever book you pick up.

Based on how many books I own, Teddy Roosevelt has to be my #1.
I also like Cal Rutstrum a lot.

For current guys, I tend to go out of my way to read stuff by Dan Schectman, Dude McLean and Christopher Nyerges (SP?). Jeff Randall has caught my attention as well lately.

Jeff Randall has some great tales too, I agree. I was mainly asking for magazine writers, but I have gotten some great response. Keep them coming.

I was lucky enough to have dinner with Bill Bryson (I got to sit next to him and pick his brain). My wife brought him into town several years ago for the lecture series she produces. He was really humble, as witty as his books and a genuine person. He really didn't let his success go to his head and seemed to have so many interests. I look forward to seeing what he writes next.
